No employee may be exposed to vinyl chloride by direct contact with liquid vinyl chloride. VCM cannister masks may be used under the following conditions: 1. Working in a contaminated area of less than 10 ppm for up to 10 hours. 2. Performing leak detection operations when Honeywell units are indicating between 1 and 10 ppm VCM. 3. Lab and Compound Department personnel may perform their normal duties when VCM levels are less than 10 ppm VCM as measured by the Lab Honeywell unit. 4. Respiratory Breathing Air System Respiratory breathing air, for use with supplied air face masks, is available to employees who must work in areas where high VCM concentrations may exist. Pressurized breathing air, supplied via a non-lubricated compressor, is available for use with respiratory equipment at plant areas where use of such devices will be necessary. To ensure that the vinyl chloride concentration in the breathing air is minimized, an activated carbon canister has been;installed on the inlet header to the breathing air compressors. Activated carbon will filter out higher concentrations of vinyl chloride which may be present in the air at the intake to the breathing air compressors. The plant breathing air system has had a moisture problem. eliminate this problem, an air-water separator and several coalescing filters have been installed. Environmental Air Supply System An environmental air system supplies non--contaminated air to the central control room, old control room, and the motor control center east of D-600 reactor. The air is gathered from the intake point located south of the railcar unloading area. A fan is then used to supply the air through ductwork to the control rooms which are pressurized to insure that any contaminated vapors in the ambient air are unable to enter the controlled areas. There is a remote possibility that the environmental air supply could become contaminated. A continuous monitoring point is located in the process control room to analytically determine VCM concentration.
