1. SCOPE
A 1.1
This specification is a standardized method of identifying installed
insulation which is asbestos free. All insulation of unknown asbestos content must be handled as asbestos. (See Victoria Plant Industrial Hygiene Procedure 10, and Engineering Standard S4T.)
1.2 This specification is applicable only for identifying installed insu lation which is known to be free of asbestos fiber content. Materials,
which obviously do not contain asbestos, such as cellular glass, glass fiber, cork, mineral wool, polyurethane foam, and polystyrene foam do not need to be marked for identification.
2. CLASSIFICATIONS
For installed insulation, specific areas on the Plant are classified as follows:
2.1 Class I. New facilities on which only insulation containing no as- j bestos fibers are installed.
2.2 Class II. New additions to existing buildings which can be clearly defined and does not contain any insulation containing asbestos fibers.
2.3 Class III. Existing areas which are modified by the addition of insulated lines or equipment using non-asbestos insulation.
2.4 Class IV. Existing areas in which existing insulation is being replaced with non-asbestos Insulation.
3. METHODS OF LABELING
3.1 For identification place strategically located strips of tape labeled 'NA' around the circunference of the pipe insulation covering or the equipment insulation covering. Position the tape with the arrows pointing in the direction in which the indicated insulation runs (Figure 1). Class II, III, and IV locations.
3.2 A permanent sign, with at least 1" letters, placed in a prominent location should be used for Class I and II locations.

4. PLACEMENT OF LABELING
4.1 Class I. Insulated lines or equipment pieces in new facilities or
segregated buildings in which no insulation containing free asbestos was installed, do not require individual identification. A permanent type sign should indicate that only non-asbestos insulation was used in this facility.
4.2 Class II. Individual insulated lines or equipment pieces in clearly defined additions in which non-asbestos insulation was installed, do not require separation identification. In lieu of marking individual lines or equipment pieces, place a permanent type sign that defines the building addition. Also locate tape on selected col mins, beams, walls, or ceilings, to clearly identify the plane at which the non-asbestos insulation starts. Position tape with the arrows orientated to indicate that, from that point on, all insulation is non-asbestos.
4,3 Class III. Individually mark all new insulated lines and equipment pieces installed as additions or modifications in existing areas to indicate non-asbestos insulation. Place a strip of tape around the circumference of the finish at the points where the pipe goes through & wall or partition. Orient the arrows to indicate the non-asbestos insulation. Where a tie-in is made to a line insulated with a material of unknown asbestos content, identify the junction of the insulation by
orienting the arrow of the tape toward the non-asbestos insulation.
4.4 Class IV. Where insulation is being replaced in an area of unknown asbestos content, by non-asbestos insulation, identify the replacement insulation by a strip of tape placed around the circumference of pipe insulation covering at the starting point and where the non-asbestos insulation ends. Orient the arrows toward the non-asbestos insulation.
