Owings Plant Metallurgist The Anaconda Company Great Falls, Montana 59401 Dear Jim: We have been unable to find any reason for the changes in* the color of the zinc oxide fume. That is, we are unable to put our finger on anything that would produce a zinc oxide suitable for American Chemet. As you know, our charge is made up of a wide variety of dif ferent ores and concentrates and by-products but we have -never been able to trace back to any single source .that would cause the off color fume. Although X would like to help American Chemet, I am at a loss to know how to do it. I suppose your research lab has analyzed the fume. Do you `think there would be any benefit in my sending a sample to our research people in South Plainfield? For about two years r.ow, Chemct has had difficulty in obtaining fume of "paint-grade" quality. They have even lowered their acceptance standards to purchase occasional batches of our present production. We have beer, unable to determine from our operation as to wlvy the quality of our fume has degor.erated away from Cheraet standards. Cheroot normally accepts several cars of fume as ''paint-grade" during a short period of time; the last period was from June 26 thru July i, 1070 when they took five cars. Such catching would indicate a feed, operation, etc. variance during cr preceding an order. Any effort by your people to help us improve Chsmet's position Is appreciated. Your bailiwick has always been very helpful to our needs and we hope that we will not hamper your operation by any future inquiry that we might make through our East Helena Plant.
