The well was originally completed by the Pawhuska Oil & Gas Company through the Indian Territory Illuminating Oil Company on the Pawhuska Anticline in the Pawhuska Oil Pool. The well was first plugged in 1940. The well has seeped gas, been re-entered and plugged three times over the years. Work continues at the present time on the wellsite. The situation is serious mostly Sierra Club v. EPA 18cv3472 NDCA Tiers 8&9 ED 002061 00171696-00001 because of the heavy oilfield equipment on the location near the school. Federal and state agencies are working along with the school to insure the safety of the children and everyone involved, also providing technical assistance to resolve the problem as well as funding.
