Williams: I am forvarding to you herewith two copies of a memorandum which I have prepared,covering my observations and recommen dations in connection with your plant. I hope this will be entirely clear and that it will assist you in coming to certain conclusions as to what is to be done at the present time. I should be happy to be of any further assistance to you, and if questions of fact and procedure come up which you would like to present to me, please do not hesitate to do so. I have made certain recommendations with respect to dust samples, and I have made certain suggestions also with reference to analytical work which we might do on your behalf if you desire i t . In order that there may be no mis understanding between u s , I think I should point out to you that any such work which we may do will be done at cost to u s . For present purposes this cost can best be estimated in terms of individual samples. It costs us approximately $5.00 per sample to analyze various types of biological materials. You will be able to figure your cost on this basis, and thus you will not be going beyond what you are able to spend. You will remember that I suggested our complete willingness to have Dr. Donaldson visit us. I am sure it would be pro fitable for him to spend a day here at least. He could spend longer if he has the time and wishes to do so. I could provide him with complete information concerning our manner of dealing with industrial lead exposure. I think I could also give him very useful information in relation to diagnosis and treatment as well as to the medico-legal aspects of the problem of industrial lead poisoning. I should be very glad to make his acquaintance, and I should regard any possible assistance which I might be able to give him^as a pleasure. Let me also remind you that I suggested the advisability of obtaining tissues of the deceased man for] further analyses. If such tissues are available, I should be glad to have them sent along. Under present circumstances,were I in your position, I should strongly hesitate to accept the compensation costs in this case without further analytical Information. If It should seem desirable to do something along thl3 line, please let me know, for I should be glad to make some suggestions concerning the tissues that ought to be obtained as well as the manner of obtaining them. I enclose herewith a bill to cover my expenses and services. I send this without delay merely because we do not keep books on such matters. Finally, allow me to thank you very sincerely for your kind ness and courtesy to me. Your trip to and from Lorain certainly saved me from very great inconvenience as well as saving me an entire day. I neglected to: remind you of the information which I requested concerning your employment records, the length of service of various employees, the hours of work at present as compared with previous periods, and the magnitude of the present exposure compared with previous exposure as expressed in terms of the use of metals . This information will be of considerable help to me. I find also that I have not made specific reference in the memorandum to the samples of dust which I would, like to have. I would like to have samples of dust taken from rafters, window ledges, shelves, and various flat surfaces in the foundry, the melting room and cleaning room, and other rooms adjoining the foundry. These should be taken fairly carefully in envelopes or otherwise, and each should be carefully labeled so that you' and I will have no difficulty in identifying them. For your further information, we analyzed the sample of molding sand which I brought back with me, in such a way as to determine the concentration of finely divided lead which might remain suspended in the air as a dust. It turned out that there was 0.01$ of such lead in this sample. This result is lover than I expected, and I am very glad to know that it is so low. Of 0021699 Mi*. Clifford T.
