At pointed out in the Letter to Shareholders, important changes were made in our organiza tion during the year. The various parts of our business have been restructured into groups and each placed under the direction ot* a. group vice president.
Heretofore, responsibility for research, production, distribution, marketing and accounting had been divided along functional tines. Now all these responsibilities are divisionalized in accordance with the business interests of each segment of the corporation. This change speeds decision making, provides mote affective communication and insures faster action in relation to market changes.
The restructuring is reflected ia the reports from the group vice presidents that follow. All comparisons to last year have been made after reworking last year's figures to conform with the new concept of organization.
To round out the reports from each of the group vice presidents, we have included review* from other executives in which their particular areas of responsibility are covered. We believe their comments and observation* will give you a more complete view of th operations of your company.
Individually, the reports focus on the various parti of our business; collectively, they reflect the strengths with which your company faces the future. Wo are confident w will success* fully meet the chaUengre and opportunities that surely lie ahead.

We moved into Id additional limed departments. due#? m mass merchandising outlets, dunng the year. However, the total number efiuch deportment* wt now opmato declined to 279 from JIO a year ago. This redacts the continuation of programs established tom* nme ago by tome retail chains under which they eventually take over operattou of these department* themtelves. Sales to dealers hcM up well. As mpcctad. deeler-ewned buying organizations and multiptonni* retailing concerns were our best dealer customers wuh th* imaUar

Sales to painting contractors and to industrial maintenance customers began to show improvement during the second quarter of th* year and have continued that pattern. The former were spurred by the increase m housing >un. Not only did this affect tales for new construction, but slso ndeconiiofi and home improvement.
