Parlett opened the meeting with a reviev/ of the purpose of NIMA and a brief resume of past business* Discussion of function of NIMA including present activies, 1, Detailed resume of NIMA activities regarding revision of Government specifications. y/ 2, Discussion of NIMA's efforts regarding the preparation of a "Glossary of Terms", 3, R. C, Parlett instructed those in attendance that NIMA was also preparing a "Reference of Technical Data Sources'1. Introduction and distribution of NIMA Economic Thickness Table. 1. Chalkboard explanation of basic formulae used in compiling the manual. 2. Detailed explanation of symbols used. 3. A copy of the manual was given to each of those in attendance, 4. Detailed discussion and explanation of charts and contents. A problem was worked utilizing the table. C. E, Ernst assisting R. C. Parlett. The meeting was then opened to general questions and discussion. 1. Frank Govan of BRAB wanted to know if NIMA was going to provide separate tables for "Underground". > 2. F. Grafton of Maritime requested that NIMA comment on their planned revision of Section 9 specification. W. E. Miller will forward this to NIMA Headquarters for distribution and comments. 3. Discussion of structure of a "Proper Specification". 4. Reviewed amplified method of using Manual for more stable application conditions, r \ 5. Bob Smith- Bureau of Ships requested a meeting be arranged with concerned Bureau of Ships personnel and NIMA T & R Committee members to discuss various problems. W. E. Miller will contact B, Seith in this regard. 3 The following subjects were suggested by Government personnel for discussion and review at future NIMA sponsored meetings: 1* Discussion and review of Federal and Military Specifications with the target being updating or elimination of now existing but in adequate specifications* A1 Graul, Bureau of Yards St Docks* ^ 2. "Heating Distribution Systems" - G. B, Seeley, Air Force, 3* Acoustical treatment of research ships - Coast & Geodetic Survey. 4, New developments in insulation - Govan, BRAB 5, Separate conference on Revisions of S-39-2 ~ B. Seith, Bureau Ships, 6, Y/hat recommendations can be made to reduce the cost of insulation on Government subsidized vessels? - F, Grafton, Maritime It was suggested by R. C. Parlett that Washington representatives of NIMA T St R Committee explore these questions further and submit report to Jack Barnhart, ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
