Line Release Letter #966 Competitive resin Investigation TO-53 Ms?* <J*o Wo Xllff| Xj &IXo Mr* Ho Bo Youjag, Lab* ID MARSHALL L .* Philadelphia Laboratory June 4, 1946 "INDgf3" MSMORAHDBM REPORT #M-57 firatiici copy "PULOX" METAL PROTECTIVE BIAGE ^ ^&AIIH fnis memorandum will report the results of experiments to eliminate the soya bean oil "DULUX" resin from 25-051, ttDULUX?f Metal Protective Black, and 87-001 Trim & Trellis Black, which is supplied by 25-051* 7f yehiole of 25-051 is a l/l blend (on a solids basis) of RC-193 s 62$ soya bean oil "DULIIX" resin/RC-114, 50$ soya bean oil "DULUX" resin. When supplies of soya bean oil became criti cal, the use of competitive resins, Beekosol P-296-G ana Beokosol P-7, were investigated. Beokosol P-296-G as the entire vehicle provided a black finish, which dried slightly slower than standard 25-051, was slightly softer but satisfactory in other respects. Replacing the RC-193 portion by Beokosol P-296-0 and RC-114 by Beokosol P-7 appeared to provide a product equal in all respects to standard 25-051, However, after completing preliminary studies of these competitive resins, Wilmington Management decided that these resins should be reserved for whites only. A detailed study of PRC-P-36983, 63% linseed oil PE "BULUX" resin, was conducted. This resin, as the entire vehicle, dries slightly faster to the tack free stage than the standard 25-051, but had poorer through dry. A ladder of up to 6$ VC-1000 on the solid vehicle showed that approximately 1.7$ would in crease through dry to equal that of 25-051 and such a formula still dries slightly faster than 25-051. In addition, this type formula, coded 25-683, had equal gloss, slightly superior wrinkling resistance, brushed slightly easier and had slightly better flow than 25-051, but adequate sagging resistance. Stability tests indicated that it would behave like 25-051* This new produot, 25-683, was also set up to supply the new Trim & Trellis Black, 87-683, These products are discussed in Release Letter Bo. 966. 8*7 and Notebook 3056, pages 6 and 7* The products discusset above are exposed in Exposure Study Series Ho. 9095* PHILADELPHIA LABORATORY VR0:MEH V. R, OLSON P.S. Following approval of Release Latter Ho, 966, the Sales Department requested that the 25-051 and the 87-001 oodes be retained, sine many of the Sales Bulletins contain these codes. Release Letter Ho. 966-A was, therefore, prepared to advise that 25-051 had been revised to the 25-683 composition and 87-001 was reinstated to be supplied by 25-051. 25-683 and 87-683 ware obsoleted. .
