Re: Monthly Report, September, 1976
7 October 1976
A study was made to increase the heat recovery from the flue gas in the convection section of the ammonia primary reformer by evaluating the effects of various service configurations and tube surfaces (fin characteristics). The total amount of heat which could be recovered if the stack temperature could be lowered to 350F (design) from the present 435F was calculated to be 3.5 MM BTU/hour. Ten alternative configurations were considered. The configuration with the best indicated heat recovery (2.6 MM BTU/hr.) was also the most complex and expensive, but a reasonable payout was indicated. This alternative would be practical only if the entire convection section were to be disassembled for maintenance. The beat calculated heat recovery to be realized with minimum modification of the upper part of the convection section was about 1. 0 MM BTU/ hr. In all cases, the proposed modification of the process air heating section would result in an outlet air temperature of 925F, for a heat gain of 1. 2 MM BTU/hr. over existing conditions. A formal report will be issued when cost figures on new tubes are received from Foster Wheeler.
The CE to install flexible seals around the tops of the ammonia reformer tubes to minimize air leakage has been approved. The design package and materials are on order.
Condensate returned from Amines Is now being corrected for the quantity being flashed off in the Boiler Area and used in the low-pressure deaerator.

January, 1977, and should be completed at budgeted costs.
PROJECT WORK
A. Purchase Orders
Purchase orders totaling $172, 900 were issued during the month of September. The materials and equipment ordered included an air dryer system, the roof for the rail car loading area, conduit, electrical materials, piping materials, chemical cleaning area structural steel, insulation, welding supplies, multi-tube instrument bundles and capital spare control valves.
B. Civil Construction
1. The foundation was poured for the dryer building and erection of the structural steel was started in mid-September.
2. Concrete floors were pouredon two levels of the recovery structure.

R. E. Jones PVC Expansion Report 4 October 1976 page Three
3. The lateral pipe rack installation was completed.
4. Structural steel was ordered for the chemical cleaning area.
C. Equipment and Piping
1. The installation of the gas holder was completed and the tank wa6 successfully tested and accepted.
2. The installation of the stripping tower was completed.
3. Installation of the new Nash recovery system was started during the latter part of September.
4. The fluid bed drier was installed in the drier building structure.
5. The installation of the transfer piping between the holding silos and the over track silos was completed. Initial resin transfer tests are now in progress.
6. All major piping work is in progress with work presently con centrated around the reactor building and recovery system.
7. The old Trane refrigeration machines were removed from the first floor of the existing polymerization building to make room for the solutions make up systems.
D. Instrumentation
Work continued to install the communication links between the control panel and computer, Work was initiated on the running of instrument bundles from the control room to the field instrumentation. Most of the control valves have now been received and are in the process of being installed.
Computer program development work stands as follows:
1. All main line programs have been checked out and further testing is unnecessary until the trial water teste runs can be made.
2. The Comgen programs are complete and are waiting for tie-ins from field instrumentation for further testing.
3. CRT control programs are being revised by Taylor to eliminate "bugs".

4. All logging programs are being checked out. Some problems have shown up that require program modifications which are in progress.
E. Electrical
Electrical tie-ins were made to the over-track bulk transfer system so that the system could be tested. Work continues on the installation of starting control centers and field wiring.
