STANDPIPE DRUM SPRAYING MATERIAL 0022419K? October IT, 19^1 Mr. Charles Wassemail Ethyl Gasoline Corporation Box 1271 Wilmington, Delaware Dear Charlie: Lss Roberts has Just shown me your letter and I am writing to explain to you our interest in this problem. From a hygienic point of view there are very definite advantages to the use of small quantities of gasoline in flushing drums, as this will result in the displacement of a smaller volume of air saturated with tetraethyl lead. Dr. Kehoe and I have looked over the material and think that the device has very definite possibilities. There remains of course the question of what the concen tration of tetraethyl lead will bo in the residuum in the drums when they are returned, but I presume that some data is available from previous studies using the regular method of washing and a basis of comparison should be possible. Les Roberts is now working in the Medical Department here in Cincinnati and helping U3 with a variety of engineering problems. In recent years, there has been a considerable degree of development of devices and equipment for the cleaning of tanks and the like and there has not been adequate integration of all of the efforts which sometimes have been going on quite independently in various Divisions in the United States. One of Les' responsibilities will be to tie together these activities and to carry out the final developmental work if indicated. This arrangement will result in equipment, such as the drum washing device, changes in Safety Manual, Blenders' Instruction Handbook, and the like, being made his direct responsibility with the understanding that he work through the various interested people and Divisions, in the development and perfection of these things. Any Mr. Charles Wasserman - 2 - October 17, 19^1 assistance that you can give him will be greatly appreciated by us. I expect to be at the Lead Plant in late November and will stop in to see if you have any matters to discuss at that time. Cordially, vr V/ili'ard Uaehle, Li.D, tfg 0022421
