Llnnett FIRE RETARDANT PRODUCTS *I Harry Rourka Jus bean working on two very tiroble K iln oiss Jobe. The f i r s t Is a new subway la Toronto. The Gccond is eubvay to be b u ilt in Washington, D. C. ii Kilnoiao has not performed acou stically when applied to a o lid backing. E ffo rts are being made to find a way to increase Its sound abaorbancy. Kitnoise contains asb estos. Research a t Easton is working on formulation modifications that would eliminate asbestos. The asbestos content ie not a problem at this time] however, i t is reasonable to assume that i t may be la the future. In Harry' memo of 9/9/71, attached, indicates a tremendous market for construction raatorial such as Kilnoice possessing fire proofing properties. I asked Harry to forward information on fire retarduncy sp ec ifica tio n s and j te st procedures. (Also attached are Harry's le tte r of 9/10/71 and The Gypsum A ssociation's brochure on "benign Data" for Fira Resistance and Sound Control. The potential indicated for an improved Kilnolso and a f ir e retardant construction product Is enormous. I t appears to me that tha technology used to understand and formulate acceptable products Is sim ilar to that required for the search for Improved fire.retard an t pigments for the carpet industry, Firex and Pyrolytic Graphite products. The idea I'm promoting Is a systematic and unified approach to develop products that f i l l f ir e rctardancy needs in pot only the markets mentioned above but the many others that have a need. j j Hay I suggest that you look into tha fe a s ib ility of a more formal approach to developing products fo r these needs. _ _ _ i ! j t t PFZ0234
