The economy added 156,000 jobs in August, the Labor Department reported Friday, down from 189,000 in July.
Average hourly private-sector earnings were up 2.5 percent over the previous year. In July, earnings were also up 2.5 percent. The unemployment rate was 4.4 percent, up from July's 4.3 percent.
Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg had predicted the creation of 180,000 jobs, an increase in overthe-year hourly earnings of 2.6 percent, and an unemployment rate of 4.3 percent.
