Dear Arnold:
Reference our recent discussion on the use of Abex 693-551G and Carlisle MMD39 m the same brake.
Considering the six possible set-ups and -trying to cover manufacturing, sales and engineering considerations, it is our opinion that the best arrangement would be the lower friction material Carlisle MMD39 on the cam and anchor positions of the leading (bottom) shoe and Abex 693-551G on the cam and anchor positions of the trailing (top) shoe. This would keep performance compromises to a minimum--we believe there is sufficient cushion and provides for the best wearing arrange ment.
The above would have to be confirmed by dynamometer tests. We would suggest running one 121 test on two or three of the more practical arrangements. Then run at least two more 121 tests on the best set-up, followed by an FES 74. We schedule a JL21^test for 24 hours and seven days for an FES 74. You .-could have most of your answers within two weeks (six tests) after the brake went on the dynamometer.
As I mentioned, Mahwah is a separate contracting agency. Details could be obtained for this program by writing directly to Mr. D. E. Steis/Manager-Engineering Test Center, Abex Research Center, 65 Valley Road, Mahwah, NJ 07430, Phone No. 201/529-3450.

Speaking for ourselves, we would only be happy with an arrangement whereby we get both cam and anchor block business. For the main part, we do not have sufficient tooling to make all one or the other. Secondly, the pricing is quite different between the two parts.
Please contact me if we can be of further service.
Very truly yours
