A medical opinion line been exproeoed in certain of the refineries that hearing impairment z relatively cosmon among certcm groups of workers, ouch aa the bcilersmkera. Eevover, high noiee levolo am encountered in other parte of the refinery ea well. Potentially undesirable noiee lovclc might be encountered in the vicinity of high-speed pumps, in compressor rooms, in generator rooms of the penfar houses, to mention only a feu.
Inadequate illumination la a problem that affects clerical persanrei as much and as often es process workers. Satisfactory illumination must be considered in closo conjunction with tho Job to bo porfoimed and is u con-eeite of a number of items -- the intensity of the light, its color, contrast, amount of glare, and angles of incidence. Potential difficulties arising from inadequate illumination may bo encountered in any area of the refinery tut is most likely to orioc from clerical activities.
Fortunately, the open type of construction employed in retroleur. refining reduces tho number and variety of gonoral ventilation problcnn with which tho industrial hygienist nurt contend. Becauro ventilation for health protection io ao poorly understood, every industrirl hygienist must bo conversant with hoed and duct design, fan types, and the propor collector to uce for the specific contaminant. The capital outlay for a satisfactory ventilating system Is for too large to permit unconcern ovor its future performance by tho industrial hygionlct.

Thio individual is trained on-l experienced on tho evaluation and control of atnosphoric contaminants vithin a plant and it is only a small step, and a very logical one, for him to be called upon for similar functions related to tho discharge of undocirable contaminants into the atnosphore of e community. With respect to sanitary facilities, it would be desirable to be
assured that
governmental requirements arc net and exceeded and that

the lack of suitable facilities, their location, or their physical condi
tion, io a rery real problem. On the other hand, tide condition is being

aspoct, hao entailed a tremondous amount of offort and tho oni io not in
sight. Dovoloping incldonco figuroo for tho Chemical Irodncto aroa alone
utilized all available porsonnol from tho Nodical Department of tho Jersey
Company and our own for ocveral weeks, and incidence figuror. for the alcohol
plant are Just now boing completed. Tho etiologie agent As not known but
no offort io being operod to identify it. Only after the problem has been
vo11 dofinod will it bo possible to 60t up an intelligent control program.

Undor the existing conditior.o, th* precautions used, and the concentrations cf oulfido that are now found, it io the opinion that the danger lo not only oyo irritation, but poccitly chronic systonic poisoning, from lav conccntraticnc. The currently used eulfide detector io not censitivo enough, to pick up ccr.centrationo of there r.neo which will produce physiological effects. An adoquate appraisal would depend upon using abooluto quantitative chemical methods and intsgrated camples.

mitted to the analytical laboratory for analynia. More than 60 samples
have been collected and chocked for mercury no far. Thia study io continring. In several locations iwrcury yapora have been found by atmospheric r.arrrv
ling. In some of thece locations vhore mercury io rogulerly ueed; a vock.iy
check la being cs-do end a roccrd kept by the operating personnel or the
analytical laboratory at the request of the departmental supervisor. Other
heavy metals vhich have been located and vo kr.ov present enough exposure
that they should bo studied or tine, chromate, cadmium, and to a lessor
degree, beryllium. Up to the present tine no quantitative values arc avail
able on these materials.
Silica and cstectcs are both extensively ucod in the Rofinory by
a limited number of employees. To date the only quantitative atudy ve hevo
made dealt vith the composition of contact clay. The fros Bilicc contont of
these clays has been determined by a caroful chemical analysis seriated by
x-ray opoctograph. It io felt that a otuiy on the atmospheric concentrations
on ailica and silicate duct associated with rolinlng the furnaces is cf
immediate Importance. Silica bricks are commonly ucod in lining the furnr.crs
used in the Refinery. Even vhere silicate bricks are used, it is known that
in high tomporatures theoo silicates docompoco to form very dangerous forms
of silica, criotobalite, end trldymlte.
The exposure to aaboctos under normal operating conditions in the
Refinery le not* oxtencivc but frequently it io necessary for an insulator to
do work inside of e closed space vith limited ventilation. Tasking It roseibln
that a high concentration of asbestoc dust may be engendered. Also,the

At the Acid Plent and at the SOp Plants/ low concentrations of cul-
fur dioxido end trioxidoc aro potential problems. Many complaints have been
received at various times from the Acid Plant, and it vac observed that various
operations carriod out there involve irritating concentration:). As a happy result of an activo doportmont management's attempt to improve these condi
tions, the current situation is much improved. The proof of those improve
ments was recently brought to our attention when It was reported that employees
are now roquootiDg tc be asoignod to the Acid Plant rather than trying in every vny poaslble to get transferred away. Hot all of the problems have been
solved, but much money for tho jxrrpooe of improving this area has boon spent
and even moro- Hao been requested.

proper but in the surrounding community, a study has boon instigated to teko

Refinery and the Specialty Plant, but also the Production Department err]

that the analyst reports. In some departments the supervisor fces net felt

has carried cut the chemical and engineering services. In come instnr.cec th" equipment and time were not available to the Industrial Hygienist and he has
turned to the inductrial hygiene services of the Texas State Department of

to be present in the atmosphere. These public officials have fcesn very co
