The health hazard of asbestos dust was described in a previous bulletin. Briefly, it cap produce-a type of lung disease (asbestosis), lung cancer, mesothelioma (cancer of \ the chest lining), and cancer of the stomach, colon and rectdm. Cigarette smokers are particularly susceptible to the effects of asbestos. These effects develop slowly, and usually do not become evident until many years after initial exposure. The rise in asbestos-related diseases is now occurring in shipyard workers and others exposed to asbestos during World War II and the following years. The asbestos hazard was not recognized at that time and exposures were much severer than they are today. The incidence and seriousness of asbestos health effects has prompted the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) to issue notifications to some 400,000 physicians. Also in the past year, HEW has stepped up efforts to inform industry and workers on the subject. LAM 004791 Several months ago an asbestos safety order was issued in the Refinery (S-125) and was up'dated in the Chemical Plant (S-35). The safety order covers the required work practices for handling DPMC-02428 1 and disposal of asbestos-containing materials. The phase-out of asbestos-containing materials began in 1973 with asbestos insulation. Substitution for asbestos materials has proceeded but is not yet complete. It is especially important for those who handle these materials and who remove old insula tion to follow all precautions. and others. Prevent exposure to yourself - \. An annual medical examination program for insulators and others who have worked with asbestos extensively was initiated several years ago. Asbestos-related disease can be traced to the inadequate work practices which resulted in substantial exposure.
