MINUTES OP 'TTTg CCCUPAIIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY COMMITTEE MEETING NATIONAL INSULATION MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania October 10, 1967 The meeting was called to order on October 10, 1967, at 11:30 A.M. at Chatham Center in Pittsburgh with the following persons present. Members: Dr. L. B. Grant Mr. C. L. Sheckler Mr. ?. H. Edwards Mr. L. 0. Horowitz PPG Industries Johns-Manville Owens Coming Certainteed Products Guests: Mr. J. Vyverberg Dr. Bishop Mr. E. Fedder Owens Corning Owens Corning Johns-Manville This meeting was held in conjunction with the official luncheon at the Annual Industrial Hygiene Foundation Meeting. Mr. Sheckler reported a bad press in New Jersey in regard to the relationship of asbestos exposure and mesothelioma. In his opinion, this had made it even more urgent for his Education Subcommittee to develop the second round Educa tional Program for the H3CNA. A3 part of this program, a pamphlet is being. prepared on the safe han^ing 0f insulation materials. Target dates given by Mr. Sheckler for the Education Subcommittee's activities included a February 1, 1968 consideration of the entire program by the Occupational Health & Safety Conanittee. The final program must be ready for presentation at the Regional HCNA meetings by April 1, 1963. On the subject of possible recommendations in regard to pre-employment and periodic medical examinations for the insula tion workers, Mr. Sheckler requested that Dr. Grant provide'his Subcommittee with a recommendation in regard to examination content. ' Mr. Sheckler reported his meeting with Dr. I. J. Selikoff at which time he briefly discussed the NIMA Educational Program. Dr. Grant reiterated his pre viously expressed opinion that the Committee coordinate the Educational Pro gram in preparation with Dr. W. C. Cooper to minimize so far as possible con flicting advice being provided by our group and Dr. Cooper's group. 'While at the time of meeting no information was available in regard to the present status of the U. S. Public Health Service mineral fiber industry study, Dr. Grant briefly met with Dr. Lewis Cralley of the U. S. Public Health Service following the meeting. Dr. Cralley indicated he would be contacting various member industries in NIMA to establish the cohorts for the U.S.P.H.S. Records Study of the mineral fiber industry. The question of establishing another Subcommittee of the Occupational Health ' & Safety Committee was raised by Mr. Sheckler. The purpose of this Subcom mittee would be to respond quickly to inquiries or problems directed to the PLAINTIFF'S is EXHIBIT PLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT -j>. z. 2. -2 Occupational Health & Safety Committee. Following a discussion it was decided that formation of the Subcommittee would be postponed until seme experience had been gained relative to the nature of the present problems. To date, no problems of the sort envisioned by Mr. Sheckler have come to the attention of this Committee. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted. L. B.
