DEFINITIONS AND MARKING TERMS 2.1 DEFINITIONS 2.1.1 Interior packages. 2.1.1.1 Unit package. The first tie, wrap, or container applied to a single item or a multiple thereof, or a group of items of a single stock number preserved or unpre served which involves a complete or identi fied package. 2.1.1.2 Intermediate package. An interior container which contains two or more unit packages of identical items. 2.1.2 Unpackaged items. Items not pack aged that are to be placed in a shipping container. 2.1.3 Loose or unpacked items. Items which do not require a shipping container. 2.1.4 Shipping container. Any exterior container which may be used for shipment. 2.1.4.1 Bale. In conformance with Speci fication MIL-B-3149, Baling of Clothing and Equipage. 2.1.4.2 Noncompressed bale. Same as bale except that no compression is applied. 2.1.4.3 Cloth covered bundle. An item (such as most tents) pattern folded and packed by covering with jute, burlap, or cot ton osnaburg cloth. 2.1.5 Palletized unit load. For the purpose of this standard, a palletized unit load shall consist of a container or a number of con tainers placed on a pallet, or skid platforms or runners, and secured thereto for the pur pose of shipping as a unit. 2.1.6 Cognizant activity. 2.1.6.1 For marking at contractors facil ities. Head of the bureau or service for which the supplies are procured. 2.1.6.2 For marking at installations. Head of the bureau or service having responsi bility for storage and shipment. 2.1.7 Methods of preservation and pack aging. Methods established by Military Spec ification MIL-P-116, Preservation, Method of. 2.1.8 Levels of preservation, packaging, and packing. Levels established by appro priate departmental instructions for Preser vation, Packaging and Packing Levels. 2.2 Marking terms. Unless otherwise speci fied herein, when the following marking terms are specified, the words "Stock No.", "Nomenclature", etc., shall not be shown in the marking but the information indicated shall be completed as follows : 2.2.1 Stock number. The stock number shall be the exact stock number specified in the contract or order or as specified by the cog nizant activity concerned. The Federal Stock Number shall be used when provided. When no FSN has been issued, the space imme diately above the stock number used shall be left blank for subsequent placement of FSN. The stock number shall not be altered by any addition or deletion. 2.2.2 Nomenclature. Nomenclature shall be the exact nomenclature of the item specified in the contract or order or as specified by the cognizant activity concerned, Note, Nomenclature shall consist of the item name approved and published by the Office of Cataloging, OASD, and such additional modifiers or portions of the approved item description as may be required by the cognizant activity. Abbreviated nomenclature as authorized by the cognizant activity concerned will be permitted. 2.2.2.1 Assorted items. The specifica tion number shall be that shown by the con tract or order and shall include the revision designation and amendment, for example "MIL-P-6064A(2)'\ In addition, as appli cable, type, grade, style, class, size, etc., shall be shown. 2.2.4 Quantity. Quantity shall be the num ber of units contained in each unit package, and the number of units of issue in each intermediate package, shipping container, bundle or secured lift. When specified by the cognizant activity concerned, the abbrevia tion "QTY" shall be used. 2.2.5 Unit of issue. Unit of issue shall be as specified in the contract or order. Fol lowing are examples of units of issue: piece, pair, bottle, can, each, dozen, gross, pound, gallon, yard etc. Unit of issue shall be used in conjunction with, and on the same line as number of designated units of issue. When specified by the cognizant activity concerned, the abbreviation "UN" shall be used. 2.2.6 Gross weight. The weight shown on shipping containers, bundles and secured lifts, etc., shall be the gross weight indicated to the nearest pound. The abbreviation "WT" shall be used. 2.2.7 Net weight (air shipment) (Navy). The net weight shown on air shipment con tainers for the Navy shall be the weight of the contents, not including dunnage, cush ioning or the exterior container. The net weight shall be shown in pounds; fraction will be rounded to the next higher pound. The abbreviation "NET WT" shall be used. The net weight and gross weight shall both be shown on air shipments. 2.2.8 Cube. Cube shall be the cubic dis placement of the shipping container bundle or secured lift, or the item, whichever is the greater, calculated from the extreme overall length, width, and height dimensions, and shall be shown in cubic feet to the nearest 1/10 cubic foot, expressed decimally. Ir regular, cylindrical or round items shall be considered as rectangular solids. The ab breviation "CU" shall be used. Inches expressed as decimals of a foot for calculation purposes shall be as follows: 1 inch 0.09 2 inches .17 3 inches .25 4 inches .33 5 inches .42 6 inches .50 7 inches 0.58 8 inches .67 9 inches .75 10 inches .83 11 inches .92 12 inches 1.00 2.2.9 Outside dimensions. Outside dimen sions shall be shown on all shipping con tainers, bundles or secured lifts, having a cube of 30 cubic feet or over or having any single dimension of 72 inches or over. Out side dimensions shall be shown in the order of length, width and height and shall appear in addition to the cube. Dimensions shall be shown in feet and inches to the nearest inch, 2.2.10 Protection and date markings. Un less otherwise specified, the markings re quired by 2.2.10.1, 2.2.10.1.1 and 2.2.10.1.2 shall be applied as applicable to all interior packages, shipping containers and palletized unit loads protected at level A or B (see 2.1.8). In addition, the markings required by 2.2.10.2 through 2.2.10.4.2.2 shall be ap plied under the conditions specified therein. 2.2.10.1 Levels of preservation and pack aging, packing, method of preservation and month and year preserved. 2.2.10.1.1 Interior packages. The level of preservation and packaging of the contents, the level of packing, the method of preserva tion and the earliest interior package date, as specified in 6.1.1, shall be applied in ac cordance with the following example: A /A 1A-11/56. Where a shipping container or palletized load contains items with different level of preservation, packaging, packing or methods of preservation, markings for all items will be shown on the shipping con tainer. Example: A/A-1A-11/56, A/B-1C11/56. 2.2.10.1.3 Shipping containers and pal letized loads (Unlike Items). Shipping con tainers and palletized loads with unlike items will not have the level of preservation and packaging of the contents, the level of packing, the method of preservation or the package date indicated thereon. 2.2.10.2 Date manufactured. For all items or assemblies required by applicable specifi cations, bulletins, drawings, or other doc uments to be marked with date of manu facture, the date of manufacture as required in the applicable document shall be used and shown on packages and containers. When two or more interior packages bear different dates of manufacture, only the earliest date shall be shown on the shipping container. When the contents of a shipping container includes two or more unlike items, no date will be required on the shipping container. 2.2.10.3 Date cured. For all rubber (or synthetic elastomers) items required by ap plicable specifications, bulletins, drawings, or other documents to be marked with cure date, the cure date as required in the appli cable document shall be used and shown on packages and containers. When two or more interior packages bear different cure dates, only the earliest shall be shown on the ship ping container. When the contents of a shipping container includes two or more M IL -ST D -1 2 9 B 6 January 1958 unlike items, no date will be required on the shipping container. 2.2.10.4 Expiration date. The expiration date used shall be that date which has been established by the manufacturers or specified by an authorized activity. When two or more interior packages bear different expiration dates, only the earliest shall be shown on the shipping containers. 2.2.10.4.1 Sensitized Materials. For sensi tized materials and for other items, specified in the contract or order, except drugs and biologicals, the expiration date shall be used and shown by month and year on packages and shipping containers, and shall be in dicated as shown by the following example: "EXPIRES 4/54." 2.2.10.4.2 Drugs and biologicals. For drugs and biologicals (potency dated materials), both the date of manufacture and expiration date shall be used and shown by month and year on packages and containers, and shall be indicated as shown by the following example: "MFD 4/52 EXPIRES 4/54." 2.2.10.4.2.1 Perishable biologicals requir ing refrigerants. The name and address of the contractor, or manufacturer when specified, shall be shown by name, city, and state only. To be delivered and returned to refrigeration as soon as possible. May be unrefrigerated for period of actual transit to receiving ac tivity provided this can be accomplished within three or four days. If delayed enroute, return to refrigeration during delay. "DO NOT FREEZE OR ALLOW TO BE SUBJECTED TO TEMPERATURES ABOVE 95F. AT ANY TIME." 2.2.10.4.3 Hazardous chemicals. All pack age units of hazardous chemicals to be ultimately issued to the consumer who may be exposed to such chemicals under condi tions of ordinary use shall have affixed there to such warning labels as may be required in accordance with the Manufacturing Che mists Association's Manual L -l, A Guide for Preparation of Warning Labels for Hazardous Chemicals or in accordance with appropriate Department of Defense in structions as published which shall take precedence. 2.2.11 Lot, batch, or control number. Shall be that series of numbers or letters establish ed by the manufacturer to record production and control of product. 2.2.12 Serial number. The serial number shall be that appearing on the item as as signed by the manufacturer or the Govern ment for identification or control purposes, and when unit packaged shall be shown on each unit and intermediate package and shipping container, except when several items bearing consecutive serial numbers are packed in one container only the first and 2.2.14 Contract, purchase, order, or office identifying number. The contract, purchase order, or office identifying number shall be that appearing on the procurement docu ments covering the shipment. When the con tract and purchase order number are both shown, the purchase order number shall be used; and for the Medical Services, when the contract and office identifying numbers are both shown, the office identifying num bers shall be used. 2.2.15 Shipping package number. 2.2.15.1 Overseas shipment. Shipments identified with an overseas address shall be numbered as directed by the cognizant ac tivity. 2.2.15.2 Domestic shipment. Unless other wise specified by the cognizant activity, for domestic shipments of identical items, pack age numbers will not be required. For do mestic shipment of mixed items, containers shall be numbered consecutively, starting with number 1, and the number shall show in addition, the total number of containers, palletized unit loads or unpacked items com prising the shipment, for example, package No. 2 of a 28-package shipment shall be in dicated at "PKG2 of 28." The shipping pack age number for shipments within or between Military departments shall be in accordance with Bureau or Service regulations or in structions. 2.2.16 Requisition, project, and consign ment number. Service color black (37038) is assigned for the Navy except for FROM (Name of consignor and ad electronics (Navy) color green (14187) and C dress) (City and state). Medical Supplies color maroon are assigned. TO (Name of consignee and address) (Street, city, and state). 2.2.18.2 Overseas address. Overseas ad dress shall be as specified by the cognizant activity and in accordance with the regula tions contained herein. IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE OVERSEAS ADDRESS BE THE MOST CONSPICUOUS MARKING ON THE CONTAINER AND THAT IT BE AS LARGE AS THE AVAILABLE SPACE AND STENCIL LIMITATIONS WILL PERMIT (See 4.1.8.1.2). If a surface does not permit the placing of the overseas ad dress all on one line, a break will be made only when a dash (space) occurs. Bureau symbols shall conform to the design shown on figure IB. Navy Bu reau and Coast Guard symbols shall be sten ciled in black. Stencils for these symbols may be procured from the following sources un der appropriate stock numbers indicated in Class 7520 of the Navy Stock list of general stores. Contractors may obtain stencils for Navy bureaus through the cognizant govern ment inspector. Navy bureaus: From Naval Supply Depot, Scotia, 2, N. Y., and Naval Supply Center, Oakland, Calif. U. S. The symbol for the Medical Services of the Armed Forces shall be in accordance with the design shown on figure 2, and shall be stenciled in the appropriate service color specified in 2.2.19.1.1. 2.2.19.3 Armed Forces Symbol for Sub sistence. MATERIALS 3.1 General. All marking material shall be as specified herein or an alternate approved by the cognizant activity. When a particular marking material is not specified, the best material commercially available for the pur pose and approved by the cognizant activity, shall be used. Marking material shall be free from defects and imperfections which may affect serviceability of the finished marking. be an olive drab enamel conforming to Fed eral Specification TT-E-485. 3.4 Overcoating material. When undercoatstencil ink-overcoat or undercoat stencil paint-overcoat method is specified (see 4.1.1.3.1 and 4.1.1.3.2), overcoating material shall be clear spar varnish conforming to Federal Specification TT-V-121. 3.2 Waterproofing lacquer, varnish, label adhesive, cement and tape. Lacquer or spar varnish for protecting and waterproofing markings shall conform to Military Specifi cation MIL-L-1118, Lacquer, Clear, Brush ing; and Thinner and Federal Specification TT-V-121, Varnish, Spar, Water-Resisting, respectively (see 3.4). Label adhesive or cement shall conform to Military Specifica tion MIL-A-4833, Adhesive, cellulose Ni trate Base and Military Specification MIL A-3941, Adhesive and Protective Coating Material, Water-Resistant, for Paper Labels and Marking respectively. Transparent pres sure sensitive tape for waterproofing mark ings shall conform to type III of Federal Specification L-T-101, Tape, Shielding, and Identification, Pressure Sensitive. Tape shall not be used to waterproof exterior container markings. 3.3 Undercoating material. When under coat-stencil ink-overcoat method for porous surfaces or undercoat-stencil paint-overcoat method for nonporous surfaces is specified (see 4.1.1.3.1 and 4.1.1.3.2), undercoating material shall conform to the following: 3.3.1 For pourous surfaces. Undercoating material for porous surfaces shall be a white primer conforming to Federal Specification TT-I-25. 3.5 STENCIL MARKING MATERIAL 3.5.1 Stencil ink. Stencil ink shall conform to Federal Specification TT-1-558 (for marking nonporous surfaces: metal, glass, etc.) or TT-I-559 (for marking porous sur faces: wooden boxes, fiber cartons, etc.) as applicable. 3.5.2 Lacquer, enamel, and gasoline soluble paint. Lacquer and enamel for stenciling shall conform to Military Specification MIL L-6805, Lacquer, Camouflage and Federal Specification TT-E-489, Enamel; Gloss, Synthetic (For exterior and interior sur faces), respectively. Gasoline soluble paint for marking unboxed and uncrated equip ment such as vehicles where applied directly to the item shall conform to Military Speci fication MIL-P-13983. Paint, Lusterless, Gasoline Removable. 3.6 Obliterating lacquer, enamel, or paint. Obliterating lacquer shall conform to Mili tary Specification MIL-L-13923, Lacquer, Lusterless Sand, Obliterating. Lusterless enamel shall conform to Military Specifica tion MIL-E-74, Enamel. Lusterless, Quick Drying, and shall be sand color 30277 of Federal Standard No. 595, Colors. A quick drying opaque paint, when approved by the cognizant activity, may be used for obliterat ing marking. 3.3.2 For nonporous surfaces. Metal ship ping tags shall be corrosion resistant. 3.9 Waterproof envelopes. Waterproof en velopes for packing lists, bills of lading, ship ping documents, etc., shall conform to Mili tary Specification MIL-E-4069, Envelopes, Packing Lists, Water-Resistant. 3.10 Decals and transfers. METHODS AND SIZE OF MARKINGS 4.1 INTERIOR PACKAGES, UNPACK AGED ITEMS, SHIPPING CONTAINERS AND LOOSE OR UNPACKED ITEMS 4.1.1 General. Marking of interior pack ages, shipping containers and unpacked items shall be accomplished by stenciling, printing, lithographing, silk screening, photo marking, and other similar processes, embossing, roller coating, stamping or by use of tags or labels as specified herein. 4.1.1.1 Condition of surfaces to be marked. All surfaces to be marked shall be clean and entirely free of oil and grease, and any marks not applicable to the shipment con templated shall be removed by covering with obliterating lacquer, enamel or paint (see 3.6). the container surfaces shall be given a smooth, even coating of applicable under coating material prior to stenciling, (see 3.3). After stenciling with stencil ink, a smooth, even coat of overcoating material shall be applied (see 3.4). 4.1.1.3.2 Undercoat-stencil paint-overcoat method. When specified by the cognizant ac tivity, marking of nonporous surfaces of shipping containers and unpainted items shall be accomplished by an undercoat-sten cil paint-overcoat method. The marking area of the container surface and unpainted item shall be given a smooth, even coating of the applicable undercoating material prior to stenciling with stencil paint (see 3.3). After stenciling, a smooth, even coat of overcoat ing material shall be applied (see 3.4). 4.1.1.2 Legibility and durability of mark ings. All markings shall be clear and legible and not less than the size specified (see 4.1.8). Markings shall be non-fading and durable. 4.1.1.3 Protection of marking. When speci fied herein (see 4.1.5 and 4.1.6), or required by the cognizant activity concerned, mark ing shall be protected by a coating of trans parent waterproof protective lacquer, ad hesive or clear spar varnish (see 3.2). When required by the cognizant activity concerned, markings shall be protected by methods specified in 4.1.1.3.1 and 4.1.1.3.2, Trans parent pressure sensitive tape (see 3.2) may be used for protecting or waterproofing the markings on interior packages, but shall not be used on exterior containers. 4.1.1.3.1 Undercoat-stencil ink-overcoat method. When specified by the cognizant ac tivity, marking of porous surfaces of ship ping containers and unpainted items shall be accomplished by an undercoat-stencil ink-overcoat method. The marking area of1 4.1.1.4 Use of labels, The use of labels on the shipping containers is prohibited except for the domestic address or when required by regulation or statute (see 6.9) and where the size and type of shipping container does not permit stenciling in accordance with specified sizes or where specifically author ized herein (see 4.1.6, 5.5, 6.1.2, 6.3, 8.3.4.1, 8.6 and 8.13.1). 4.1.1.5 Hand lettering. When authorized, by the cognizant activity, hand lettering may be used providing the lettering is of uniform size, legible, and meets all other marking re quirements, except that hand lettering of labels is not permitted. 4.1.2 Stenciling. Stenciling shall be accom plished by brushing, rolling, or spraying a sharply cut stencil with stencil ink, lacquer, or enamel. Stencil materials shall not be ex cessively thinned. 4.1.3 Printing. Such markings may be applied on all interior and exterior containers. 4.1.4 Lithographing, embossing, roller coating, or stamping. When lithographing or roller coating of markings is authorized, commercial enamels, lacquers or inks, in the color specified, offering the greatest durabil ity on exposure to field service conditions, shall be employed. When stamping is speci fied, commercial waterproof and petroleum resistant inks, in the color specified, offer ing the greatest durability on exposure to field service conditions, shall be used. 4.1.5 Tags. A metal, waterproofed cloth or waterproofed paper shipping tag, bearing the required markings shall be used when specified hereinafter (see 8.3.2.1, 8.3.8.I. 8.3.4.1, 8.4.5, 8.5.1, 8.5.2, 8.6, 8.7, 8.8, 8.9 and 8.12) or whenever the container, unpackaged item or unpacked item is such that it is im possible to stencil marking thereon, or im practicable to use a label. Cloth or paper shipping tags, after the markings have been added, shall be coated on both sides with a transparent waterproof protective lacquer, adhesive or cement (see 3.2). Tags shall be attached with wire or twine (see 3.8). Wires shall not be smaller than 23 gage (0.0258 inch diameter) tag wire or other suitable corrosion resistant metal fastener. When rusting of tag wire will affect or damage the item to which the tag is attached, then twine specified in 3.8 shall be used for at taching tags. Markings on tags other than metal shall be printed with waterproof ink or typed; metal tags, with dies or punches. Maximum size of tags shall be 28 square inches. 4.1.6 Labels. Labels shall not be used on metal surfaces except as required by regulations or statute (see 6.9) or when specifically authorized by the cog nizant activity concerned. 4.1.6.1.1 Securing of labels (shipping con tainers), Labels for level A or B packs shall be securely affixed in place with water re sistant label adhesive, as specified in 3.2, placed on the complete underside of the label. Labels for level C packs shall be securely affixed in place with adhesive in accordance with commercial practice. 4.1.6.1.2 Protective coating of labels. La bels for level A and B packs shall be water proofed by coating the entire outer surface of the label with waterproof lacquer, varn ish, or label adhesive (see 3.2). The label adhesive shall not smear or blur the mark ings. Labels printed on the underside having heat activated adhesive will not require pro tective coating. Labels for level C packs will require no protective coating. 4.1.6.2 For interior packages. Required markings on labels for interior packages shall be printed, typed, or reproduced. Size of the label shall be consistent with the size of the package and of a size which will per mit ready identification. Pressure sensitive and heat activated plastic coated labels may be used in lieu of paper labels. 4.1.6.2.1 Securing of labels (interior pack ages). When contracts or orders specify that cer tain equipment, component, or parts shall be moisture fungus proofed, each unit or inter mediate package containing materials so treated shall be marked with the symbol "MFP". 5.5 Method II, unit pack. Method II packs which are interior packages shall bear a pre cautionary label (see fig. 18) on all unit packs. 5.6 VCI unit pack. Units protected with VCI materials shall be marked with a label conforming to Military Standard MS 16110, Label, Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor. Method II packs which are shipping containers shall bear a precautionary label (see fig. 18). 6.4 SHIPPING PACKAGE NUMBER 6.4.1 For domestic shipment. Shipping package number shall be applied as specified in 2.2.15.2 for mixed items and shall be lo cated to the right of the identification mark ing (see fig. 4A). 6.4.2 For overseas shipment. Shipping package number shall be as specified by the cognizant activity. 6.5 Bill of lading, shipping order or vouch er number. Unless otherwise specified by the cognizant activity concerned, bill of lading, shipping order, or voucher number shall be applied on all shipping containers, palletized unit loads, unpacked items, etc., and shall be located, where practicable, to the right of the identification marking and immediately be low the shipping package number where shipping package number is required (see 2.2.15). When labels or tags are used, the bill of lading, shipping order, or voucher number shall be on the area most suitable for the purpose. 6.6 Destination marking. The domestic and overseas address shall be as specified in 2.2.18 and shall appear on containers, palletized unit loads, sacks, and unpacked items as specified in 1.5 and 1.6. 6.7 Service designations. (See 2.2.19 and 8.3.5). Service designations shall be applied to all packs of items consigned to overseas destinations or purchased to fill overseas re quirements. On Inter service Requisitions, service color markings shall be as applicable to the requisitioning service. 6.8 PACKING LIST, INVOICE AND SHIPPING DOCUMENTS TO ACCOMPANY SHIPMENT 6.8.1 Packing list. For containers packed with unlike items where full description of the contents cannot be shown on the contain er, separate packing lists shall be prepared as required, for each box or container. One copy shall be placed inside of the container on top of the contents and shall be sealed within the waterproof case liner when such is used, or otherwise shall be sealed in a waterproof envelope, and one copy placed in a waterproof envelope which shall be tack ed, stapled, or otherwise securely attached to the outside of the container in the most protected location (preferably the end of the container on which identification marking appears, between the cleats). For overseas shipment, the waterproof envelope shall be further protected with a packing list pro tector fabricated of plastic, plywood, metal, or other durable material which shall be tacked, stapled, or otherwise securely at tached over the packing list. The words "PACKING LIST" shall be embossed or shall be imprinted on the outside face of the protector with waterproof black or red ink in letters not less than % inch high. Tacks or staples shall not be driven into the enve lope in such a manner as to fasten or bind packing lists nor shall they be of such length as to penetrate the shipping container. 6.8.1.1 Cargo Transporter (CONEX). A packing list shall be prepared for each Car go Transporter (CONEX) listing the con tents (FSN, nomenclature, unit and quan tity) . Labels shall be placed as shown in figures 7B and 7D. 6.10.3.3 Vehicles, tanks, cranes, and other large unpacked pieces of equipment shall be conspicuously labeled with the Foreign Aid labels on one side and one end. 6.10.3.4 Bags, bales or bundles of items, such as rods, tubes, brooms, etc., shall be tagged with a minimum of two Foreign Aid tags as described in 6.10.1. 6.10.3.5 Loose unpacked items (except ex plosives), such as tires, large pipe, etc., when large enough to carry the Foreign Aid label shall have the label applied directly to the item in a conspicuous position. Where loose or unpacked items are too small for such direct application, or the surface is of such nature that the label will not readily adhere thereto, they shall be tagged with the Foreign Aid label as required in 6.10.3.4. 6.10.3.6 Palletized items or containers (ex cept explosives), known to be destined for a foreign recipient at time of palletization, shall be individually labeled or tagged with the Foreign Aid label as prescribed in the foregoing paragraphs. Items or containers already palletized, when taken from stock, shall be labeled or tagged with the Foreign Aid label on a surface accessible from the outside of the load. 6.10.3.7 Explosives on pallets or in boxes, drums, kegs or metal shipping containers will be labeled with the Foreign Aid label in two different locations. 6.10.4 Labeling exceptions. Foreign Aid shipments for United Nations Korean Re construction Agency or to the United Nations Donation for Relief in Korea are not re quired to be marked with the shield shown in figure 16. The shipping containers shall be numbered within each set so that the like contents shall always be contained in like numbered con tainers of all sets and the total number of containers employed per set for an item shall not vary. 7.3 HANDLING MARKINGS 7.3.1 Fragile items. Unless otherwise spe cified herein (see 5.2), at least three sur faces of all rectangular containers or three equally spaced points on the circumference of cylindrical containers packed with deli cate or fragile articles shall be marked "fragile" by any of the applicable methods listed below (see fig. 3). The fragile mark ing shall not be used indiscriminately, and shall be used only on those containers which, because of the delicate or fragile nature of their contents, require particular care in handling. The fragile marking shall not be placed on the lower one-third of the sides un less specifically required by regulations or statute. 7.3.1.1 Fragile labels. The label shall be imprinted with a red fractured disc (see fig. 3) on which is imposed in white the word "Fragile." The labels shall be either cut out to the shape of the fragile disc or imprinted on square material. The size of the discs shall be 2V6, 3% or 51/4 inches in diameter de pending on the size of the container. When imprinted on square material, the above size discs shall be on 2V6, 4, or 6 inch squares, respectively. Labels shall be either solvent activated or of the pressure-sensitive type affixed and placed so as to be conspicuous but not interfere with any other markings. 7.3.1.2 Fragile stencils. Stencils may be used in lieu of labels for imprinting the fragile disc on shipping containers provid ing the word "Fragile" imposed on the red disc is in contrasting color. The size of the discs shall be either 2%, 3% or 514 inches in diameter depending on the size of the con tainer. 7.3.1.3 Fragile imprints. Containers im printed with the fractured disc may be used in lieu of labels providing the color of the background (and color which forms the word fragile, etc.) is in contrast to the red of the fractured disc. The size of the disc shall be either 2Yg, 3% or 5*4 inches in diameter depending on the size of the con tainer. The imprint shall be of a permanent nature. 7.3.2 Arrows. Where consideration of the safety of the contents necessitates that the containers be stacked with the top surface up, two sides of rectangular containers and two equidistant points on circumference of cylindrical containers shall be stenciled with the word "UP", and an arrow pointing to ward the top of the containers shall be placed beneath each stenciled word. Arrows shall be employed only to indicate, or supplement the words "This Side Up." These markings shall not be used indiscriminately and are to be affixed only when it is essential. 7.3.3 Equipment including battery. When special assembly instructions and warnings are required, they shall be supplied by the shipper and shall be con spicuously indicated. 7.9 Service data. When drawings, pam phlets, books, spare parts lists, or wiring diagrams to be used for installation, opera tion, or maintenance of the equipment are packed within the same shipping container as the major item or component part; such containers shall be marked to indicate that such material is contained therein and shall be located on the side op posite from the one marked with the identi fication marking. 7.10 Engineering or technical order changes or modifications. LOCATION OF MARKINGS ON INTERIOR PACKAGES, UNPACKAGED ITEMS, SHIPPING CONTAINERS, PALLETIZED UNIT LOADS AND UNPACKED ITEMS OTHER THAN FOR SUBSISTENCE ITEMS AND PETROLEUM PRODUCTS 8.1 General. The required markings for other than subsistence items and petroleum products shall be placed in the location here in specified but, so as not to be obscured by cleats or strapping. Arrangements of marings shall be as shown on applicable figures. 8.2 Interior packages and unpackaged items. Wherever practical, marking on inte rior packages and unpackaged items shall be located so as to allow its being easily read when stored on shelves or stacked and to in sure that the marking will not be destroyed when the package is opened for inspection or until contents have been used. 8.3 Boxes and crates. For the purposes of this standard, it is assumed that the box or crate will have two ends, two sides, a top, and a bottom. Open crates and other ir regular containers shall be marked to con form to this standard as closely as the avail able space and shape of the container will permit. For location and methods of mark ing small containers see 8.6. (See figure 4A through 6B.) container. When container is 10 cubic feet or under, only the stock number, quantity and unit need be applied on the end. 8.3.2.2 Overseas address. Overseas address (see 1.6) shall be stenciled or printed direct ly on the lower one-third of the end of the container. When container is 10 cubic feet or under, the overseas address shall be omitted from the end. 8.3.3 One side (to the right when facing the marked end). 8.3.3.1 Identification marking. Identifica tion marking (see 6.1) shall be stenciled or printed directly on the left, when facing the side, in the upper one-third of the side of the container. When permitted by the cognizant activity, metal tags may be used and shall be fastened securely to the container. 8.3.3.2 Overseas address. The overseas ad dress (see 1.6 and 2.2.18.2) shall be stenciled or printed directly in the lower one-third of the side of the container. 8.3.1 One end, top, and bottom. One end and the top and bottom shall always be free of any markings except service color mark ings required by regulation or statute or necessary for safe handling. 8.3.2 Other end. 8.3.2.1 Identification marking. Identifica tion marking (see 6.1) shall be stenciled or printed directly on the upper two-thirds of the end of the container. Unless otherwise specified or required by statute or regulation (see 6.9), special markings (see Sec. 7) as required, shall be stenciled or printed direct ly and located on the side of the container, preferably in the upper two-thirds area. S.3.5.2.3 Army. The appropriate service symbol of the Chemical Corps and Signal Corps shall be stenciled on shipping contain ers marked with their respective service colors. All other appropriate service symbols for the Army will be applied only when specified by the cognizant activity. (See 2.2.19). 8.5 Bales, noncompressed bales, and cloth covered bundles. Size of lettering shall be not less than 1 inch except that overseas address and precautionary marking shall be as speci fied in 41.8.1.2 and 8.5.3.3, respectively. 8.5.1 Bales and noncompressed bales. When the waterproof barrier ma terial or the makeup of the bale prohibits legible stenciling, then the stock number, nomenclature, and size when applicable, shall be marked on a water-proofed shipping tag which shall be securely fastened under one of the straps. 8.5.1.6 Domestic address. The domestic address (see 1.5 and 2.2.18.1) shall be mark ed on a shipping tag securely affixed to wire tied ear of the bale. 8.5.1.7 Overseas address. The overseas ad dress (see 1.6 and 2.2.18.2) shall be stenciled on the lower one-third of the side of the bale on which the contract data appears. 8.5.1.8 Service designation. (See 2.2.19.) on the ends, except for attached shipping tag on one wire tied or sewn ear. 8.5.2.2 Panel for marking. A rectangular panel of sand colored lacquer, enamel or paint, as specified in 3.6 shall be applied to the top surface panel of each bundle (and may extend down on the front side panel if necessary) with placement being as close to the left edge as possible. The colored panel may be made as large as necessary to provide background for prescribed markings, but minimum dimensions shall be two square feet in area. (See figs. 8C and 8D). 8.5.2.3 Identification Marking. The iden tification marking specified in 6.1 shall be stenciled on the upper two-thirds of the colored panel with black waterproof ink spe cified in 3.5.1. The lower one-third of the panel must be clear of all marking. 8.5.2.4 Contract data (see 6.2). Stenciling shall be in ac cordance with 4.1.2 and the size of letters and location of information shall be as speci fied in 8.11. (See fig. IOC). 8.13.2 Cloth wrapped rolls. Rolls wrapped with cloth shall be marked in the same manner as specified for bales (see 8.5) ex cept that end marking need not be applied. 8.12.2 Tagging. If the bag material is such that the information is not legible when stenciled, the information shall be printed on a tag. Tags shall be as specified in 3.8 and 4.1.5 and the lettering in accordance with 4.I.8.3. 8.12.2.1 Bags with ears. If the top of the bag has ears, the tag shall be securely af fixed to one of the ears. (See fig. IOC). 8.12.2.2 Top of bag stitched. If the top of the bag is closed by stitching, the tag may be attached in the same manner as for bag with ears or the tag may be fastened to the bag by stitching at the same time the closure is made. (See fig. IOC.) 8.13 WRAPPED ROLLS 8.13.1 Paper ivrapped rolls. Rolls wrapped with paper shall be marked on one side (ap proximately 14 of circumference) by stencil ing or printing or by a typed label which shall contain the identification and contract data. This combined marking shall occupy not more than the upper one-third of the side of the roll. One end shall be marked with a typed label which shall be applied to the end of the roll in accordance with 4.1.6. This label shall contain only the stock num 8.14 Boxed carboys. Boxed carboys shall be marked in accordance with 8.3. In ad dition, a non-corrodible metal or plastic disc or strip stamped with the contract number shall be permanently attached to one side of the carboy box. The marked disc or strip shall not interfere with other markings on the container; and shall be permanentlysecured to the container in such a manner that the disc or strip will not catch in any way on other containers. 8.15 Marking unpacked vehicles. Unless otherwise specified, marking unpacked ve hicles shall be as follows : 8.15.1 Address markings shall not be stenciled or placed directly on the painted surfaces of unpacked items such as tractors, trucks, passenger cars and buses. Two tags, bearing complete addresss markings shall be placed in each vehicle, one of which will be tied to the steering post or lever, and the other in the glove compartment or similar accessible space. Other pi'ecautionary markings required and special handling instructions specified in 7.3, and regulation and statute markings speci 10.9.1 Rectangular shipping containers. (See figs. 14A-14D.) Rectangular shipping containers shall be marked by stenciling or printing the information marking specified in 10.2.1 and 10.2.2, respectively, on the upper two-thirds of one end panel. When space available does not permit the marking as specified, the name of the contractor and date packed, shall be omitted from the end panel and stenciled, printed, or labeled (see 4.1.6) on the upper right hand corner of the side of the box, to the right of the person viewing the marked end. Paper shipping sacks shall have the address stenciled or printed in the space between the information marking. When the load i s being strapped, thread the strap s through slo tte d metal embossed marking tags at le a s t 3" x 5-1/2" on two adjacent sid e s and the top of the u n it load. Thread the tag on the top of the u n it load on a strap which does not contain a sic e marking tag.
