Kennedy Subject "A" Furnace Asbestos Exposures Address ETC Date May 19, 1980 On February 19, 1980 I monitored three TEL maintenance insulators for asbestos exposure. The men stripped the in sulation from "A" Furnace dryer on the 11-7 shift in order to do the job with less traffic going through the area. All personnel wore long sleeves, gloves, and dual cartridge highefficiency respirators. The insulation was wet and placed in plastic bags. The bags were then sealed, labeled, and placed in metal drums for disposal. The clothing worn by the person nel removing the asbestos was also placed in a plastic bag and sealed for disposal. Calculation of sample results indicated an exposure range of 0.6 to 1.0 fibers (>5 ym in length) per cubic centimeter for the duration of the demolition (approximately 2 hrs.) and an exposure of 0.2 to 0.3 fibers (>5 ym) per cubic centimeter based on an 8-hour time weighted average. All exposures were well below the OSIJA standard of 2 fibers per cc TWA. The removal of insulation from a furnace dryer was well done, meeting both OSHA and good hygiene requirements.
