Your letter of January lth addressed to the Ethyl Gasoline Corporation has been referred to me for further reply*
; For some years I and isy associates had occasion-H
to see a number of ernes of skin irritation as the result
of handling various kinds of gasoline* Our experience leads
us to conclude that there is no demonatreble difference,
between, the Irritating offset of Ethyl Gasoline and that of
tho corresponding gasoline bas without the Ethyl Fluid in
gredients* Gasoline is injurious to the- akin and certain
persona are particularly sensitive to onr or taore of the
substances which are contained In.various trades of gasoline*
Usually the severe conditions sro tho result of infection
of a skin which lias been irritated -from contact with gasoline.
The gasoline extracts the oil from the skin, leaves it dry
and cracked and than infection of various sorts develops
on this surfnet* In a few of these cases, the entire injury
is due to tho gasoline and in these Instances tho individuals
aro sensitive to akin testa such as you have apparently keen
su: jected*
The treatment of such conditions is difficult
and may sometimes recul c the maplete cessation of exposure
to the gasoline
It would ho Impossible for me at this distance to decide anything about the character of ;.-our particular condition, but I would suggest that the moat satisfactory
cours is for you to as a competent dermatologist for advice and sine you live In Philadelphia, this should be very' easy. However, if I dan be of any further service to yon, I shall bo glad to do so*
Eery truly yours,
HAKsIS
