Tittmann We refer to our conversation of July 5th wherein you re quested definite information as to what we expect to do with the generator in order to reduce the temperatures in the rotor; and your request to our Mr. W. E. Da r.ver of July 9th. We also wish to answer Mr. McL. Tittmann1s letter of July 19th. We have now received word from our Electric Machinery Mfg. Co. advising that: No. 1. We intend to replace the blowers on each end of the shaft with corresponding baffle changes and install a larger air cooler with corresponding air duct changes. No. 2. The fan and baffle changes will require no\ plant changes since they are changes to the generator itself only. No. 3. The only changes required to outside equipment in the cooler exchange is that the water pipes to the cooler will have to be shortened 6-7/8". Otherwise the location of the pipes is the same. No. 4. The high temperature reading referred to in your dis cussion with our Mr. Danver is felt to be due to extraneous resistance in the temperature detector wiring. Our Electric Machinery representative will require one skilled mechanic and one helper to take care of his portion of the work. Shipment until July 28th and are tentatively piginning to have their man here on August 9th. This date will have to be agreed to by our Steam Turbine Service & Erection Department in order that they will be able to have a man present at the same time the Electric Machinery man is here. We wish to advise further that the air cooler for the generator was shipped July 11th, directly to your Smelter. We also have been informed by our Steam Turbine Service & Erection Division that their service man will require a shut down of approximately two weeks to properly install the labyrinth packing on this turbine, assuming no other difficulties encountered. They furthermore advise that they are replacing the oil pump on this unit, substituting a pump with a sleeve Instead of needle bearings, to Insure greater reliability. The installation of this pump is to be handled as part of the inspection by our Wellsvllle service man. Our Wellsvllle Service & Erection Department estimate the follow ing skilled and semi-skilled men should be available: 2 - skilled mechanics 2 - Helpers 1 - Crane operator 1 - Machine tool operator They furthermore advise that they intend to use Mr. Green for this job.
