RE: INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE COMMITTEE MEETING OCTOBER - 1964___________________________

Cafeteria. Attending the meeting were Messrs. C. L. Huey, G. J. Myers,

Four dozen special ear muffs have been obtained, thirty of which
are to'be placed in the Foil Mill by the end of this week. These will
be placed in the areas of the No. 3 Mill, #11 Trimmer, and Lindberg
Furnace. Ear muffs minus the head and ear cushions will be issued to
the areas needed, and the operators will be issued ear and head cushions
separately for sanitary reasons. '
The duct work on No. 1 Scalper has been coated. The area of the
scalper has been checked out with the Davenport noise level instrument
\
and found to be within a safe range. A shop order is being circulated
to cover the cost of coating No. 2 Scalper Ducts.

It was reported that the exhaust system, tools, etc. for sawing
marinite are on order. The marinite problem with respect to skin irritation
is not as acute as we were heretofor informed.
A copy of a newspaper clipping was presented to the committee whicn\
is attached to Mr. Bonney's copy of the minutes of this meeting for his
comments. This newspaper article concerns asbestos as a possible cause )
of lung cancer.
A new cleaning unit is being set up in the Foil Mill to clean doctor
blades, rolls, and so forth. The cleaning solution used is Magnus No. 704
which we are informed contains ketones, glycols, emulsifiers, detergents,
etc. which should present no major hazard, however, its performance will .
be observed carefully.
An odor problem was reported during the month in the area of the No. 5
Wax Laminator in the Foil Mill. The situation was checked and it was found
that the odor was not that of strong ammonia as reported but only a trace.
The major odor was alcohol. Further checking will be done on this unit.
It is planned to proceed immediately with a RA to provide a hearing
booth and equipment in the Medical Department. This will be used for pre
employment and management personnel surveys gradually working into more
extensive investigations.
A formal report of treated alodine wastes will be set up as a check
to prevent hexovalent chromium from being dumped to industrial waste.
The Committep requests that any questions concerning FDA problems be
referred to W. C. Harvey-since he is the F & DA representative for the
Davenport Works.

- To Cancer i . i NEW YORK (AP) -- Medi cal specialists pointed a strong finger of suspicion to day at asbestos as a cause
not only of lung cancer, but also of another extremely rare form of fatal human
cancer. This cancer, known as
mesothelioma, involves the ' lining of the abdominal and , chest cavities. Much of their : evidence comes from autopsy
: studies of men working, with asbestos as an insulation ma-
! tcrial.
1 But they said it also Is pos siblc that dust from products
containing asbestos might be exposing people generally to some risk of cancers. .
