The samples were received on May 30, 1989 and analyzed on May 31, 1989 in accordance with NIOSH Analytical Method No. 7400/Rule A. >. A pie-shaped portion of each MCE filter was cleared with 1:1 Dimethyl phthalate-Diethyl oxalate mixture and examined by Phase Contrast Microscope at a magnification of 400X. Upon examination, the length and width of asbestos fibers were measured by using a Walton-Beckett G22 graticule. Any fibers less than five microns in length are not considered to be asbestos. Any particulates with a length greater than five microns and a length to diameter ratio of 3 to 1 or greater are considered to be asbestos fibers. Quality assurance practices employed include graticule calibration, recounts.
