Proposed Work and Cost Funds of-------------- --------- ----- ----- ----- ------- ----- ------------- -- -- -- $3600 are requested to purchase and install two polishing filters, in series in the effluent filtration system, B. Present Situation The existing Filtronics effluent filtration system removes all lead down to 3 microns which results in a lead concentration in the effluent of from 0.2 to 1.2 ppm which does not satisfy the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago specification of 0.5 ppm Pb maximum. The M.S.D.G.C. hearing officers strongly request that the plant effluent be brought into compliance. C. Justification In order to continue operating the Chicago Plant the M.S.D.G.C. limit of lead concentration in the effluent must be satisfied. Repeated sampling has proved that to continually satisfy the M.S.D.G.C. regulations, an absolute polishing filter must be installed. Commercial Factors This order supports a 1978 plant budget as follows: First five (5) months of 1978 Sales - Pounds 3,132,000 Sales - Pol 1ars $1,548,000 Profit on Sales $385,000 (24.8%) Sales - Pounds 7,950,000 Budget for 1978 Sales - Pol 1ars $3,985,000 Profit on Sales $1,071,000 (26.8%) E. Details of Proposal \ Two Serfilco filter chambers will be connected in series and installed between the present Electromedia 11 filter and the city sewer. The first chamber will contain filter tubes of 0.45 micron nominal retention and the second will contain filter tubes of 0.35 micron absolute retention. F. Production Factors This proposal will not alter production quality or production rates. Operating costs are estimated at $574. annually. G. Contingent Future Commitments This proposal will not require additional funds to complete. H. Alternatives Considered There are no alternatives. I. Risks No operating risks are involved. J. Concise Summary The addition of the filter chambers after the primary filter will ensure compliance with the effluent discharge require ments of the Metropoliton Sanitary District of Greater Chicago.
