The company was incorporated in 1891, as a direct result of the consolidation of 25 individual lead and oil companies, tho largest of which were located in 9 cities. An examination of the backgrounds of the founding companies would be of interest at thi3 coint. 1. Philadelphia, Pa. a) John T. Lewis and Co. - founded in 17~2, engaged in importing white lead and red lead. Uhite lead first manufactured here in 1820, followed shortly thereafter by linseed oil and colors. The company was incorporated in 1888. b) western V.hite Lead Company - little is known about the origin of this company. In 1391, control of both companies passed to the National Lead Company and they were combined into the John T. Lewis and Bros, branch. 2.
