Mclntire Mr. Carl Bartholomew Gentlemen In a discussion with Mr. Lewis some day3 ago, the conclusion was arrived at that safety engineers of the Ethyl Gasoline Corporation should make periodic visits to the technical laboratories of the Corporation, should look into the ques tion of the manner in which Ethyl Fluid is being handled, should inform themselves concerning various practices, and should make such recommendations as may seem wise to them in order to maintain uniformity throughout the Corporation. There are two points which in my opinion justify this procedure. The one is that the several laboratories of the Corporation are visited by technical personnel of customer companies. Re gardless of the merits of any method of handling Ethyl Fluid which they may see, their own attitude is that representatives of Ethyl Gasoline Corporation should abide by regulations essentially like those required of the customer companies. The second point is that the duties of the medical department have shown considerable increase and it is not always feasible to look over the details of activities in the laboratory, es pecially when these change frequently and when our visits are at considerable intervals of time. There is additional point in that safety engineers of the Corporation have had an ex perience which entitles them to a respectful hearing in any matter which has to do with safety and the application of uni form methods. I think it goes without saying that'these men will not assume a dogmatic or dictatorial attitude, and I be lieve that their activities will result in considerable bene fit to themselves and to the laboratories. If there are any comments or criticisms of this policy which appear to justify further discussion, I would appreciate It if you would write to me and tell me about them. Otherwise, I shall take it that this procedure is satisfactory and that K 0 0 2 2 6 8 4 March 31, 19^2 ( 2) every cooperation will he given safety engineers in the per formance of their duties. It is not to be assumed, however, that the physicians of the medical department will have any less interest in the activities of the laboratory or that they will not be available for consultation on any point which may arise. e anticipate that this is merely an additional precautionary measure and not a reduction of any that are now in eiistence.
