DOCUMENT DESCRIPTION: Conference Agenda, Minutes & Attendee List - Exposure to Asbestos During Brake and Clutch Maintenance
ASDESTOS CONFERENCE
The recent activity in investigating exposure to asbestos during brake and clutch maintenance arose from a letter from the Service Director of BMC to the Motor ' Agents Association, and t o the Servic'd Managers'of other manufacturers. A GP had raised the matter relative to a patient who was employed in a Dealer's workshop with the Inspector of Factories who suggested that the operation could cause a "definite health hazard". It was also suggested that the current revision of the Asbestos Hegulations would make reference to the Motor Repair Trade.
There was therefore a desire that the subject should be investigated and any necessary remedial measures sought in advance of the Legislation, so that Dealers could be advised, and Service Manuals amended as appropriate.
A meeting of interested parties was arranged by Dr White at Cowley in November 1967. At this meeting there was agreement that further investigations were required, and both Ford and BMC Industrial Hygiene Units undertook to continue their studies. A further meeting would be arranged when results were available.
Gar report on passenger cars was aeni to Dr White in July 1968 with an enquiry as to whether he proposed to re-convene the group. He suggested that the meeting be initiated from Ford, and we agreed to this, but suggested waiting until the completion of tests on commercial vehicles. This report was sent to Dr White
