"Bud" Hall (Conoco Chemicals R&D); M. Johnson, M.D., (Goodrich); S. Williams (Haskell Laboratories); and me. Dow Chemical will also provde a health professional. The committee has the task of determining the toxicological effects of halogenated polymers, including PVC, when these materials are burned. The chairman is Dr. M. Johnson, who is anxious to initiate an animal testing program. The first action item is to critique the Dyer & Esch article which is one of the main documents used by plantlff lawyers to prove that pyrrolysis prod ucts of plastics cause adverse health effects. A literature review will be prepared by a contractor. Steve Williams mentioned that hydrochloric aclq, a pyrrolysis product of PVC, is not, as alledged by the Dyer-Esch article,-a notorious intoxicant to the cardiovascular system. ' It was decided that a research proposal will be drafted by mid-August. The committee will meet during the Society of Plastics Industry Consumer Safety meeting in mid-August.
