Dr. David Eaton (University of Washington, Seattle) has played this role of with distinction during the last eight years. However, in accordance with HEI bylaws, Dr. Eaton's term will come to an end in a year, so we are embarking on the search for a new Chair. Since its founding, HEI has consistently attracted eminent scientists to serve as Chairs of our Committees; Dr. Eaton's predecessors have included Prof. Walter Rosenblith, Dr. Richard Remington, Dr. Bernard Goldstein and Dr. Mark Utell. In finding a new chair, our goal is to attract someone of similar caliber and experience. As you know, two standing scientific committees play a critical role in HEI's work - the Research Committee and the Review Committee. The Research Committee is involved in identifying research areas for HEI to pursue, planning HEI's detailed research program, selecting the highest quality projects, and overseeing ongoing research. The Review Committee critically evaluates final reports from completed HEI studies and prepares a critique of each that includes comments on the scientific merit and/or policy context of the findings. The investigator's final reports, along with a thoughtful commentary by the Review Committee, are published by HEI and provided to its sponsors and the public in print and on the web. The names of current members of both committees can be found at https://www.healtheffects.org/about. As mentioned above, we are currently searching for a new Chair for the Research Committee. He or she will lead a group of eight to ten scientists who are members of the Committee and chosen for their expertise and insights into the various aspects of HEI sponsored research - from epidemiology to animal toxicology to cell biology to atmospheric chemistry and exposure assessment. Additionally, the chair will interact effectively with HEI sponsors from the government and private organizations, and work in concert with HEI staff. We are looking for an excellent and forward looking scientist - a Ph.D. or M.D. - who is playing a leading role in the health research community and who has some understanding of and experience with the use of scientific information in policy decision processes. He or she should be a consensus builder who can help lead HEI as it continues its tradition of excellent research of the highest scientific integrity on air pollution, health, and emerging fuels and technologies - both in the national and international contexts. It is anticipated that this role would require approximately 10% of the Chair's time on an annual basis. As the first step in the HEI Board of Director's efforts to fill this position, we are requesting suggestions and nominations from the scientific community, industry, regulators and others interested in air pollution and the environment.
