February 23, 1982 POLY 'A' PERSONNEL cc: Medical Department S. Biggs A. 3. Seidule C. E. Halphen E. Whitman * ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SURVEY REPORT - 1981 < This survey will include the results of data obtained on Isopar C, Isopar-M, noise and 5102 (Superfloss) within the Poly "A" block. Appendices will be used to show the TWA (time weighted averages) exposure, according to job classification, in each of these areas. Due to the consistently very low concentrations of all other chemicals and polyethylene dust in the Poly "A" plant, they have been deleted from our survey. I. Noise Level Exposure Two methods were used to analyze for noise exposure: A. B&K noise level meter. This instrument is used to pinpoint the source of noise. B. Audio dosimeter. This instrument gathers a composite sample of noise to which an individual is exposed. 1. B&K noise level meter (see attached survey of "Evaluation of Noise Exposure", Appendix A.). The following are the areas above 85 dB(A): a. Building 804 (Extrusion Building) outside areas along the west, north and east walls are above 85 dB(A). Outside the west and north walls, this noise is caused by transfer and recycling of pellets and transfer blowers. Outside the_ east wall, the noise is produced by primary extruders and transfer blowers. Noise inside of Building 804 is due to primary and secondary extruders, transferring of pellets and spin dryers. b. Building 803 (Secondary Compressor Building). The main source of noise in this building is C-101 thru C-109 - secondary compressor. Another noise source is the train 5 pellet transfer line outside Building 803 on the northeast side. 085069 CONFTDFNTTAl Envlrbnmental Health Survey -2 Fehruary 23, 1982 I. Noise`Level Exposure (Continued) c. Building 802 (Primary Compressor Building), Each primary compressor contributes to the high noise level In this building. d. Building 809 (Train 5) inside Building 809, the noise is caused by secondary compressors (C-501 and C-502), primary extruder, transfer blowers, transfer of pellets and spin dryer. Outside, the only high noise area is around AC-5 (Air 'Compressor). 02. Audio Dosimeter - There were three classifications with individual (TWA) dosimeter readings above 85 dB(A). When questioned after sampling, none of these employees could remember anything that would have caused the high readings (See attached survey of "Noise Survey by Dosimeter",^^po|iix-B). Exposure to SiO? (Superfloss). Operators involved in mixing S102 wear Bust masks, and are only^exposed to the SiOj for approximately 15-20 minutes per mix or 30 minutes per day. The exposure to S102 was less than 0,01 mg/m^ on respirable and non respirable dust. III. Chemical Exposure. There were only two chemicals surveyed in the Poly "A" block in 1981. They were Isopar-C and Isopar-M. These are listed in Appendix-C. The remainder of the chemicals present in the Poly "A" block were not considered to be in concentrations high enough to require monitoring.
