Schramm Subject: ASBESTOS IN MINING PRODUCTS As far as I can determine, the only electrical component, in use at the present time, that contains any asbestos, is the 600 ampere d.c. contactor. This contactor uses arc chutes made from a "cold molded" melamine/asbestos material. Because the arc chute is a molded product, the asbestos fibers are bound up in the unit by the thermo-setting resins. There fore, the fibers are captured and are not released into the environment. - . The arc chute is in a non mechanical application, so that wear particles are not a factor. I have no records or documentation of the use of asbestos prior to 1970, since all of my files begin at this time.
