Koch (Chemicals Group Customer Service) received a phone call from our Pace, Florida Traffic Department informing him that a tank truck driver for McKenzie Tank lines had been injured by EBA. The driver - was preparing to load EBA from a storage tank at . . Stauffer Chemical Company in Lelioyne, Alabama for return of the material to our plant in Pace. This was the driver's second return trip; when he opened the valve on his truck he was splashed with residual EBA. Stauffer personnel took the driver -to a local physician who examined and released him. The driver returned to Pensacola and was examined by his personal physician who then called APCI. I telephoned the first aid informa* tion verbatim from the draft of the Material Safety Data Sheet for EBA to C. E. Bowman at Pace, who passed the Information to the driver's physician, I then called' Dr. Lutz (Dr. Tepper was out of town) who also contacted the physician. I do not know the driver's status. 2. On 1 June, M. Blass of the Alkylamines Business Area received a phone call from a Frank Ludovici of Calgon Corporation in Ellwood City. Two employees of Calgon were injured by DMA while attempting to dismantle a compressor which had allegedly been flushed prior to the accident. Mr. Blass called Dr. Simon at the Ellwood City Hospital emergency room and read the first aid (3201 AP00054491 Customer Emergencies/Response by Profit Center Personnel 5 June 1978 Page Two Information verbatim from the DMA MSDS to Dr. Simon; he then contacted L. B. Tepper who also talked to the physician. We do not know the status of these two men. Since these two accidents occurred within the past ten days, we have become quite concerned about the proper way for home office personnel to handle emergencies. In both cases, a copy of the new Material Safety Data Sheet was not in the customer's hand; one was in printing and the other had just been sent to our salesmen for distribution to our customers. Lacking an emergency phone number, the individuals contacted Air Products through normal channels and were eventually referred to the Business Area. How should we respond? In the event of an emergency, should we read to the caller the disclaimer and the appropriate information from the Material Safety Data Sheet, or should we connect the caller to the emergency phone number? If it is an accident involving injury, should we try to contact Dr. Tepper? Please respond at your earliest convenience as we would like to formulate a policy for the home office in order to better handle such emergencies in the future. JSP:cab o AP00054492
