No. 333 September 23, 1954 AEC PILOT PLANT UNDER CONSTRUCTION Construction of additional pilot plant facilities for treating uraniumbearing ores is progressing according to schedule at the U.S, Atomic Energy Commission's Grand Junction Operations Office at Grand Junction, Colorado. The facilities operated by the Company, will incorporate equipment for treating ores by both acid and carbonate leach processes. Supporting facilities include an ore crushing unit to provide suitable feed. The Grand Junction pilot plant is operated under the AEC Raw Materials Develop ment Laboratory at Winchester, Massachusetts, which is also operated by National Lead Company. The objective of the pilot plant program is to employ improved processes for the treatment of uranium-bearing ores to solve metallurgical problems related to obtaining improved recovery with greater efficiency, and the milling of refractory ores with equipment of a size that may be scaled up for application in full-scale operations. CONTRACTORS ANNOUNCED FOR NICARO EXPANSION The Company has announced the selection of the firms to perform the construction necessary to expand the nickel plant at Nicaro, Cuba. The films are the Frederick Snare Corporation and the Merritt-Chapman & Scott Corporation, both of New York, New York, and Havana, Cuba. They will participate jointly in the construction. National Lead Company made the selection as the operating contractor. The General Services Administration, by directive from the Office of Defense Mobilization is responsible for both the operation and the expansion of the nickel plant, The Office of Defense Mobilization has authorized the investment of up to $43,000,000 for the overall task of enlarging the capacity of the Government-owned installation by 75 per cent. The expansion program was announced earlier this year, and the necessary planning and engineering phases of the project have been advanced as an essential preliminary to choosing the firms qualified to undertake the construe tion. DIVISION NAME CHANGED The name of the Baroid Sales Division of the Company has been changed to the Baroid Division of National Lead Company. TITANIUM PIGMENT CORPORATION OPENS TEXAS OFFICE Titanium Pigment Corporation has announced the opening of a new sales office in Houston, Texas, scheduled for October 1. The added office, which will be located at 570 M & M Building, will serve Texas and adjacent states in the sale of "Titanox" pigments, H, M, Henly, formerly in charge of the Pittsburgh area, will supervise opera tions of the new Houston office. Mr. Henly started his cereer in 1940 at the Titanium Division plant in Sayreville, New Jersey, In 1947 he was transferred to Titanium Pigment Corporation in a sales capacity. He moved to Pittsburgh in 1950. - over - 0000-NLI-000024803 SWARTZ APPOINTED HEAD OF TITANIUM DIVISION DEPARTMENT Francis E, Swartz, Jr., has been appointed manager of the development and engineering department, technical department, of the Titanium Division. Mr. Swartz became a member of the St. Louis plant of the division in 1939 as a control chemist, following his graduation from the University of Illinois, He resumed work at St. Louis after service in World War II and was transferred to the Sayreville technical department as a development chemist in 1949. He was made a supervisor in the following year, HARRY M. JENSEN IN NEW*POST Harry M, Jensen has been appointed special sales representative of the leadlined products department for the Atlantic Branch. He succeeds the late Prescott Hendrickson in the position, Mr, Jensen started his Company career in 1924 as a clerk. In 1936 he was transferred to the acid recovery department, devoting his time to sales and purchases of materials. For the past three years Mr, Jensen has been active in the sales of acid recovery equipment, PACIFIC COAST BRANCH CREDIT MANAGER RETIRES; K. C. FORSHEE IS SUCCESSOR Retirement of George C, Petersen, credit manager of the Pacific Coast Branch of National Lead Company, was announced recently at a dinner given in honor of his completion of forty-five years of service with the Company, He was presented with e 45-year service pin by D, D, Roberts, Pacific Coast general manager, at the dinner which was attended by forty fellow employees. His retirement will take effect as of the end of the year. Appointment of K, C. Forshee as Mr. Petersen's successor has been announced. Fir, Forshee has served as credit manager of the Company's Southern Division since 1947 and has recently transferred to San Francisco, His position in Los Angeles as credit manager has been taken over by A. E, Colley, with J. H. Taylor acting as his assistant, to, Petersen was first employed by National Lead Company in the Carter White Lead plant in Chicago, starting as an office boy on September 1, 1909. After becoming a member of the auditing staff with headquarters in New York, he was tran ferred to the San Francisco office in 1923. Since that date he has served succes sively as comptroller of the National Lead Company of California, assistant oompti of the Pacific Coast Branch, credit and branch manager of the Seattle office, and general credit manager for the Pacific Brandi, the position which he has held sint 1942. GARVIN APPOINTED PLANT ENGINEER AT THE CHAS. TAYLOR SONS COMPANY Hugh Garvin, Jr., has been named plant engineer of both the Cincinnati and Taylor, Kentucky, works of The Chas. Taylor Sons Company. Garvin is a 1949 gradr of the University of Cincinnati. He joined The Chas. Taylor Sons Company in Sept 1953 as production control supervisor.
