CHEMOURS IN DORDRECHT
Everything from smart technology, medical devices, cars and EVs, aerospace and defence, computers and software systems, fuel cells and 5G, is powered by Chemours Chemistry. What we make in Dordrecht makes a difference everywhere. And we want to do that by being a good neighbour and making a positive contribution to society.
What do we make in Dordrecht?
The Chemours plant in Dordrecht produces fluoropolymers under the names Teflon and Viton. These advanced materials are at the heart of countless products that make modern life possible: chemistry that makes a difference.
Our fluoropolymers, which are indespensible in the production of lithium-ion batteries among other things due to their combination of properties (chemical resistance, thermal resistance, and high-quality electrical properties), make electric vehicles possible. There are not other materials available that combine these properties.
Also, not a single computer chip - needed in everything from cell phones, medical equipment, to data centers - can be produced without fluoropolymers.
The fluoropolymers we produce are not harmful because they are produced in a responsible manner.
Chemours Dordrecht also supplies advanced coolants, that are used in heat pumps, for the cooling of food and medicines as well as air-conditioning.
Not all PFAS are the same
PFAS is a collective name for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, but not all PFAS are the same.
Chemours Dordrecht produces fluoropolymers, a class of PFAS, which are crucial and irreplaceable for countless products that are essential in our society and safe in use.
We do not produce PFAS for use in paper packaging, cosmetics, or furniture sprays. We manufacture our fluoropolymers responsibly and strictly monitor each release.
Fluoropolymers are essential for the things we use every day, and for the future.
CHEMOURS IN DORDRECHT
How do we produce responsibly?
Through our emission control measures, we
minimize the impact of our activities on the community around Chemours. We have greatly reduced emissions since 2015 and authorities strictly control our emissions.
Since 2021, HFPO-DA (GenX technology)
emissions to water and air have been reduced by more than 99%. The next milestone we are preparing is to reduce residual emissions of fluorinated gases by 80% by 2024. This project is nearing completion later in 2023.
Even after that, we will continue to reduce
emissions, with the next goal of reducing up to 99%. We are at the forefront of the industry in this.
Chemours treats its waste streams with care.
Captured PFAS are transported to specialized waste processors. They ensure that Chemours waste containing PFAS will be destroyed with an effectiveness of 99.9999%.
Our ultimate goal is net zero greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions by 2050.
In short, we work every day with a team of 500
permanent employees, together with contractors and companies in the region to make our factory more sustainable.
As a training company, we train young people in
technical jobs such as process operator, engineer and maintenance technician.
Together with our employees, we invest in our
community. For instance, we partner with schools in the areas of natural sciences and work with our Community Advisory Panel to strengthen our relationship with our neighbours.
Until 2018, of the GenX processing substances that are used in the production process, approximately 40% was recycled, 57% was destroyed and less than 3% was emitted. Since then, we have reduced these emissions by over 99%.
