The Kettering Laboratory The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine - Eden Avenue Cincinnati 19, Ohio Dear Bob: As you know considerable interest has, from time to time, been expressed in the lead content of the community atmosphere and the sources from which lead reaches the atmosphere. In this latter regard particular attention has been directed to the exhaust gas from automobiles burning gasolines containing lead alkyl antiknocks. Being concerned with this problem, the major producers of lead alkyl antiknocks, E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company and Ethyl Corporation, initiated a project at Stanford Research Institute, sponsorship of which was shared with the Lead Industries Association and its associate, the International Lead Zinc Research Organization. The American Petroleum Institute also participated. The objectives of the program included: 1. The development of techniques for determining the size distribution of atmospheric lead aeorsol. 2. The determination of the nature of the lead compounds in the atmospheric aerosol. 3. Sampling of the atmosphere in selected locations to determine the size distribution of the lead aerosol. The results of this l8-month study are contained in a report entitled "Variations of Atmospheric Lead Concentrations and Type with Particle Size", a copy of which is enclosed. We are pleased to send you this report. We believe you will be interested in the sampling techniques used, especially the extensive use of the Goetz aerosol spectrometer, and in the ambient air data for Los Angeles and San Francisco which are included as illustrations of the / 2- - use of the sampling techniques.
