He worked in the tank from eigh t to nine hours a day but only with a; gas mask on two, occasion s Hie r e st of the time he had a h an dkerch ief over h is nose* According to the instruments used the tank was fr ee o f gas before he went in * '.Vhen he arrived in Ch arleston on the aftern oon of Dec ember; 4, h is symptoms were nervousness, gas on stomach, and d izzin ess. His phy sic ian prescribed for him, a mixture c f bismuth and paregoric* He called on me two days lat e r and the only symptoms which he then had were continued nervousness and ctonsidjerable fe a r . I put him under observation without doing anything fu rth er about; i t . Yesterday he complained of pain s in the post er ior muscles c f both lower extremi-' t i e s. He described the discom fort as bein g one of sor en ess. I t was not t y p ical cf a sc ia t ic a . This morning he sen t for;.me and I v isit e d him at; h is home. He was unable to work because he had a r e st le ss n igh t and t h is morning th e pain s halve in creased and seem to be largely;; in the calves of both le gs. He also h as some weakness and pain in th e muscles of th e upper ext r em it ies, i t seems to me that; he i s su ffer in g from soren ess and weak n ess in the long muscles c f the ext r em it ies. I suggested th at he go to the hos p it a l fo r US; to work h is case out and fin d oui? ju st what the cause i s . He said he did not fe e l th at badly and would r ath er wait u n t il a ft e r Christmas.
