"Taurll* Anchorite Packing. (This was our previous standard). #590 and #591 Belaont Packing Johns Manvllle Packing #170, #172 and #190 Tellumold Packing #2150 John Crane Packing.
Measuring of all these nakas of paoklng indicates that tha
inlnun variation that can be expected In tha thickness la approximately!
10ft, which Incidentally Is tha tolerance allowed In the navy

Bpeclflcatlon for this type of packing. It vas, therefore, decided to
purchase tha packing to the following specifications In tha futures
.015" .002".
Only two of the samples available came up to this specification, the Ho. 591 Balnont Packing and the Io2150 John Crane Packing. As the Belaont Packing sells for $.73#/lb. and the Crane Packing for $.J9#/lb. it Is recommended that we purchase #2150 John Crane Packing exclusively for the ^ime being.
This packing is itst oil resistant and for oil Joints It will still be necessary to purchase Johns Manvllle #23 or a similar type oil resistant paoklng.
It is also reoonasnded that the punp oaslngs where the above packing is used be bored theoretically with a .012" thick shin -- with necessary adjustments for mechanical conditions on the horizontal boring mills.
