Cook, Director, CEP] :Marvin Everhart, Project Officer, CEPD g s u b j e c t :status Report - Field Survey of Hair Dryers in Hair Salons (For October 24, 1979 Briefing) Based on information supplied by companies in response to the Commission's Special Order requiring information on bonnet, salon-type, hand-held dryers or drying guns and free standing nozzle-type blow dryers, CEPD compiled an interim list of known manufacturers of hair dryers for consumer use in hair salons as well as the manufacturers' individual model hair dryers which contain asbestos. CEPD requested each Area Office and Resident Post to survey at least five hair salons to determine whether or not hair dryers identified on the list are currently in use. Attached is a copy of the assignment. Results of the field survey are tabulated on the at tached chart. CEPD believes sell to hair salons as well as the manufacturers' individual models which . contain asbestos. Initial contact should be with beauty supply distributors to . determine which hair salons purchased the identified dryer models . from the manufacturers. . . Once a list of suspect hair salons is obtained at least five hair salon establishments should be visited in each city containing a resident poe-fe-or area office. ` During each visit, please determine (1) whether or not the hair dryers identified on the list are in use and (2) if they are in use which salon is using what specific dryer. * ' Results should be called in to Marvin Everhart at (301) 492-6608 Results must be received by September 19. One supplier in Louisville, KY sold a lot of Solanos' and Solanotronics'. Manufacturer contacted offered courtesy recall either to exchange dryer for new unit without asbestos or remove asbestos from barrel per manufacturer's instructions. 80 units returned to manufacturer (no records kept of returnees). Some owner/operators don't want to give up dryers for retrofit. In Houston, one distributor sold one Solanotronic last year but had received no notification from the manufacturer that the u n i t contained asbestos.
