REPORT OF INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE STUDY FOR
AMMCO TOOLS, INC. NORTH CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
INTRODUCTION
An Industrial Hygiene Study was performed at this location on January 6, 1978, to determine area concentrations of, and operator exposure to, asbestos fiber concentrations present in work room air as a result of the operation of:
1. Ammco Model 880 brake shoe grinder, with the Model 8150 brake shoe clamp and the Model 8925 Dust Collection System(representative also of other Ammco grinders, see Equipment and Study Procedures)
2. Ammco Model 1250 Brake Assembly Washer.
SUMMARY OF RESULTS
Under the conditions present during the study, operator exposures to asbestos fibers during grinding on either grinder, or during brake washing, were, on a Time-Weighted Average basis, below all present or proposed Federal limits, if each series of tests was considered to be the only exposure to be encountered by an operator during an eight hour work day. (In other words, if the operator operated only one grinder, and did a similar amount of grinding)
Due to the brief duration of grinding work, personal samples could not be compared to the present or proposed ceiling limits. Asbestos concentrations as determined do seem to indicate that the present OSHA ceiling limits would pot be exceeded during brake dressing on a properly maintained brake shoe grinder.
Under the conditions present during the study, general area samples in workroom air showed low fiber concentrations during grinding and washing work, except some taken around the dust collection systems of the grinders. It should be noted that those near the collection system were not breathing zone samples. Fibers gener ated around the dust collection system, however, could contribute to personal exposures.
.EQUIPMENT a n d s t u d y p r o c e d u r e s
Atmospheric asbestos concentrations were determined by collection using MSA Model s battery powered pumps and millipore membrane filters, with a submicron pore size. The top cap of each filter

sample was removed to expose the entire area of the filter during sample collection. Air was drawn through the filter at 2.0 liters per minute, and the sampling media was positioned as close as possible to the breathing zone of the exposed employee, except for the general area samples which were positioned at indicated locations, at approximate breathing zone height unless otherwise noted in the tables.
Subsequent to collection, the filters were brought to the NATLSCO Environmental Sciences Laboratory where fibers were counted on the filters using phase contrast microscopy techniques at a magni fication of 450. The NATLSCO Environmental Sciences Laboratory is accredited by the American Industrial Hygiene Association and licensed by the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare's Center for Disease Control.
The Time-Weighted Average Exposure was calculated using the for mula :
C^Tt 4- C?T? + . . . CnTn Ts
Where C represents the contaminant concentration, T the sampling time at that concentration, and Ts represents the total sampling time.
The conditions under which air sampling was conducted is defined as follows:
1. Work room; 60'1" x 38'6" x 19'4" (height) or 44,727 ft.3 Ail doors and bays closed Ventilation in the room consisted of recirculating warm air through 2 warm air returns mounted about 10 feet above the floor.
2. Grinders;
Two Model 880 brake shoe grinders were used, both equipped with Model 8150 cam action brake shoe clamp, and the Model 8925 Dust Collection system. It is felt that air sampling results would have be similar with the other grinders (Model 890 and 8000) since they differ only in the type of brake shoe clamp employed. The sanding drums on each grinder rotated at 3450 rpm. The grinders were positioned a few feet apart on the south side of the room
The "poorly maintained" brake shoe grinder was several years old, and had been used considerably. The inner plastic collection bag of the 8925 dust

collection system was about half full. The bag
was oversized, and as a result was bunched in
I spots around the outer rim of the metal collection drum. As a result, small gaps were present around the rubber gasket where the drum is fastened to
the underside of the collection system fabric bag.
I It was observed that puffs of dust were blown out from around the gasket during start-up of the
poorly maintained grinder.
I
The "well maintained" grinder was about the same
age, but the dust collection system had been
I cleaned, and a fresh, unused plastic bag was apparently carefully fitted in the Dust Collection System. No dust was observed to have been blown
out through the gasket junction of the drum and
I
fabric bag during operation.
aI 3. Comparison Grinder tests: (See attached tables) General area air samples were duplicated on both grinders during some typical dressing of brake shoes. In addition, samples were duplicated during
the destroying of brake linings. In all, about
16 total grindings were made, on eight different
*
shoes, at each of the two brake shoe grinders. In the opinion of the operator, this represented
a good day's work in a typical garage.
4. Other grinder tests:
a
In addition to the above tests, follow up air samples were taken on the "poorly maintained"
grinder after the dust collection bag was replaced
a and the metal collection drum was washed. A test was attempted with the collection system disconnected, but this was terminated when it became apparent
that large amounts of dust and fibers would accumu
late in the air when shoe grinding was done.
5. Grinder operator personal exposure:
During operation of both grinders, personal samples to evaluate operator exposure to asbestos fibers were taken. The time weighted average exposure for the sampling period was calculated for the operator based on the results of each set of samples taken at the "poorly maintained" and "well maintained" grinders.

6. Brake shoe washer;
Air samples to determine area concentrations of, and personal exposure to, asbestos fibers was done during the use of the model 1250 Brake Assembly Washer with the #1256 Brake Washer Con centrate. The car (a late 60's model Chevrolet) was located on the lift in the same workroom, about 20 feet diagonally northwest of the brake shoe grinders. This test was considered a good example of a set of wheels in poor shape, with heavy corrosion and a large deposit of ground material contained in each wheel.
DISCUSSION
The samples taken during destruction of brake shoe linings showed that during such abuse,'significant fiber concentrations were generated in the operator's breathing zone, as well as in the general area.
Based on visual observations made during the aborted test during grinding with the Dust Collection System detached, it is advised that these brake shoe grinders always be employed with the use of such a System, Excessive airborne asbestos fiber levels could be generated in the absence of the Dust Collection System.
Based on visual observation made during brake washing, it is advised that the outside of the wheel be wetted if possible before hitting it to disloge corrosion around the brake cover. Considerable airborne suspended particulate was generated when the wheel brake covers were struck, before the inside was washed.
Respectfully submitted,
