meun of epithditi origin were histologically similar to the types of lung can
cer found in human pathology. The dose of benzo(a)pyrene was found to af
fect the histological structure of the cancer cells observed: smaller doses of
the carcinogen were related to a lower frequency of squamous epithelial lung
carcinoma and a trend towards the development of tumours of the adenoid
type.

Literature review and results of animal experiments concerning the chromo some aberrations induced by exposure to polymer-containing concretes end putties. It was found that polymer concretes which produced no chronic toxic action in animals had no cytogenic effect Polymer putties containing unsaturated hydrocarbons, patrol, divinyl and xylene caused changes characteristic of certain toxic effects end an increase (by a factor of almost 2) in the number of chromosome aberrations as compared with a control group. <035*0
CIS 75-1400 Polychlorinated biphenyls. Storage, distribution, ex cretion, and recovery: liver morphology after prolonged dietary in gestion. Burse V.W,, Kimbrough R.D., Villanueva E-C-. Jennings R.W.. Linder fi_, Sovocoot G.W. Archives of Environmental Health, Chicago. USA, Dec. 1974. VoL29, No.6. p.301-307. Illus. 16 ref. (In English)
Rats were fed 6.6 to 3.89mg/kg/day of various Aroclors. and organs and tiss ues were analysed after 0.5 to 10 months' exposure. PC3s were highest in ad ipose tissue where a steady state was reached in 4 months. Little PCS-derhr-d material was excreted in urine. Enlarged liver cells with vacuolated cyto plasm and inclusions were noted. Aroclors 1015 and 1242 were less persist ent in the rat and have less effect on the liver than Aroclors 1254 or 1260.

CIS75-1402 Load poisoning and multiple sclerosis. Westerman M.P.. Braetman M_ Pfitzer E. Archives of Environmental Health. Chicago. USA, Dec. 1974. Vol29. No.6. p.355-356.14 ref. (In English)
5 individuals with typical clinical findings of multiple sclerosis were evaluated for lead poisoning using current in vivo methods. These included measure ments of lead stores, mobilisable lead, and blood and urine levels. The results showed no association between lead poisoning and multiple sclerosis and suggest that multiple sclerosis in humans is not a result of lead poisoning.

cytopenia. especially pronounced among a group showing varicosity of the

CIS 75-1405 Effects of chlorine dioxide (CiOz) on rats (disconti nuous exposure) lAction du bioxyde de chlore (CIO.'I sur le rat cn exposi

The authors investigated the effects on animals of short (ISmin) and repest-
ed 12 to 4 times s day) exposure to atmospheres conteining 5.10 and ISppm
CIOi. The results of the exptnments showed that discontinuous exposures
of 15min did not result in lung damage in the case of concentrations below
5ppm, which are considerably higher than the concentrations found in facto
ries where this gas is used-

The use of thermography in examining 3 persons with rxdiologicallyvisible se-
roosteoiysis, one person with comoiateiy recsicifiad bone lesion and 2 heal
thy controls brought to light certain vascular disorders among the 4 first--
mentioned subjects: it was impossible to ascertain whether these vascular
disorders preceded and had a causative effect on the bon* damage or not. In
frared thermography would apoear to ba of considerable use in studying the
pathogenesis of this disease, end from the forensic point of view, es well as
assisting diagnosis if the syndrome precedes the bone lesion.

Results of experiments in rabbits exposed to concentrations of 2-Z5nvjr'm3
metal mercury for 3h per day over 12 weeks. The authors found no apprecia
ble change in haemoglobin levels or red blood cell, granulocyte or lympho
cyte counts in the peripheral blood. Thera was however larger proportion of
erythrablasts in the bone marrow than in controls and an increase in the met-j-
ration index of the calls of the erythroblazt line. Megikanocytes showed no
pathological changes, iha ciscrepancies in tne results ODtameo can be ex
plained by the relative lack of precision of morphological examinations and
differences in individual susceptibility.

CIS 75-1408 Elements of industrial toxicology (Elements de toxicoith gie industrieile). Well E, Published by Masson. 120 boulevard Saint-Germain. 75006 Pans. France. 1975.347p. Klus. 64 ref. Price; FF.167.00- ISBN 2-22540403-8 (In French)
This general work, which explores occupational toxicology in its complexity
by following tne fate of the substance down to cell level, utilises the latest re
sults of physicochemical, biochemical, clinical, analytical and therapeutic re
search. It is composed of 6 main sections: the poison and ~.the atmosphere:
-the organism; ...the clinical examination; laboratory tests; ^.preventive
measures; .-the antidote. Metabolic breakdown processes end conjugation
mechanisms are clearly presented, and the complexity of the toxic effaces
(which depend chiefly on the dose or concentration, the nature and chemical
properties of the substance involved, duration of exposure, etc.) brought ouL
A large piace is devoted to interpretation of analytics! results-and to the corre
lations between different chenvcsl end biochemical parameters. The part
dealing with prevention refers to tha relevant French regulations. 32 tables,
the last of wmch mdicotes physicochemical properties, synonyms. Soviet and
U.S. TLVs, hazards and effects of the principal industrial toxins, are ap
pended. Alphabetical index.

Results of a survey on tha incidence of respiratory symptoms (cough, expec
toration, dyspnoea) rn 443 workers wth year-long exposure to cutting oil
mists 140- 150mg/mh and a control group. A review of the composition of cut
ting oils and of the published literature on the bmlogicjl effects of od rnisLi is
followed by a statistical analysis of the results: smokers and non-smokers,
aye, duration of exposure, frequency of colds. No irritative efrect of oil mists
was obseived. and indeed the possibility that they exert a protective effect
on the bronchial system is debated,
