Letters to the members urging membership renewals, outling the Founda tion's program for 1940, and enclosing dues statements, were placed in the mails eo as to reach member companies on the first business day of the new year; that was January 2. Checks and favorable acknowledgments started coming in the follow ing day. Anaconda Copper, Trenton Potteries, Universal Sanitary Manufacturing Company* and Ottawa Silica, were among the first to respond. On Thursday, the 4th, the Grinding wheel Manufacturers Association, which comprises some 50 of the Foundation's members, sent their check for $2,000. (With the exception of Carborundum and Norton Companies, this association is composed of sum!1 companies, .most of them in the $50 class of membership. Other prominent members which re newed during the week included, Johns-Manville, Westinghouse Air Brake, U. S. Smleting & hefining, Youngstown Sheet * Tube, and Phelps-Dodge companies. A letter of acknowledgment was drafted. This letter, sent as soon as the renewal checks are received, not only thanks the compaiy for its continued in terest but asks that the company assist in interesting non-members in affiliating. Not only would this be of great assistance, but, when we can prevail upon a member to help "sell" another company we succeed in further "selling" the member himself. Another letter was drafted during the week as a follow-up "prod" for use in cases of non-members who attended the November meeting but did not acknowledge our recent letters uring membership. On Thursday we called on Mr. i<*lston of the Membership Committee and discussed membership activities. We also discussed the activities of the National Association of Manufacturers and provided data for Mr. Tfherrett, who is on the N.A.M.'s Committee for Healthful Yiorking Conditions. At the same time we wrote Dr. Shafer of the N.A.M., who, with Dr. Reiser, is always anxious to obtain the Founda tion's reports. We advised Dr. Shafer that if the N.A.M., were to receive the bene fit of the Foundation's work, then some way must be found whereby the N.A.M. will help support this work. Dr. Mahon of Toledo Edison, replying to our recent letter, said he was trying to interest his company in the Foundation and asked for specific-data. The Liberty Mutual Insurance Compaiy, a leader in the mutual branch of insurance, wrote r. Reid Warren of the University of Pennsylvania caae here on Thursday for a conference with Dr. Heller and our printer, at which meeting I "sat in." This concerned the publication of the new x-ray bulletin which contains the findings from x-ray research supported by the Foundation at Penn. On Tuesday we had & signed article in the Pittsburgh POST-GAZETTE'S year-end industrial review -- a special section. The article, running about a __ column in length, was devoted to the work of the Foundation and to industrial hygiene in general in the Pittsburgh area. The December 30th issue of DOMESTIC C0:4EhCE, devoted two pages to the Foundation. One was a summary of Dr. Lanza's report on sick absenteeism which was given at the November meeting. The other page was devoted to Mr. Fletcher's paper showing that good health is good business. This was a very satisfactory presentation since the publication, issued by the U. S. Department of Commerce, has a large circulation among business men. The current issue of PITT contains a special article on the Foundation which we prepared recently at the suggestion of Dr. Hamor. Negotiations were continued with SAFETY ENGINEERING regarding a special article publicizing the solarium which the Bunker Hill & Sullivan company utilizes for the conservation of employee health.
