(conoco) Interoffice Communication To From John Burns Tom Grumbles Date June 4, 1981 Subject EDUCATION SUPPORT FOR INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE - .m I recommend that Conoco Inc, through their Financial Aid to Education Program, extend support to the University of Cincinnati, Environmental Health Institute in the form of a $8,000 Conoco Industrial Hygiene Fellowship. The Environmental Health Institute is a division of the University of Cincinnati Medical School and an established NIOSH Educational Resource Center. It has long been a leading institution for teaching and research in the fields of industrial hygiene, occupational health and toxicology. Also an industrial safety program was established three years ago. Recruiting Since the mid 1970's, with the advent of governmental regulations dealing with occupational safety and health, there has been a shortage of trained professionals in these fields. Despite the current regulatory arena, this demand will continue to grow. In 1978, Conoco employed two professional industrial hygienist. As of today Conoco employs five hygienist. It can be expected that this growth will continue at the corporate and operating department levels. As referenced in the attached letter, it is expected that the current level of federal funding to the NIOSH Educational Resource Centers will be cut next year. If industry does not help support these centers the ranks of trained professionals from which we have to recruit will diminish. Educational Excellence Occupational health and toxicology research programs were begun at the Environmental Health Institute in the mid 1930's. Since that time it's activities have continued to expand in scope and complexity to meet the ever growing demands of society. The Institute of Environmental Health provides graduate and research training in the environmental health sciences and in the management and control of environmental health problems. The Institute enjoys a reputation as one of the leading institutions in these fields.
