September 15, 1987 EM&TS - HS&EA Industrial Hygiene Asbestos Exposure Monitoring Attached are the results of asbestos monitoring for two days at the Institute Plant while removing asbestos from a 6-inch product line in a trench at Gate 38 by the railroad tracks west of the #1 Dock Area. Approximately 180 feet of line was stripped of asbestos insulation. An enclosure was not used because of danger from flange and valve leaks of toxic chemicals plus heat from steam lines in the piping. Glove bags were not used because of the configuration of the piping in the trench. Four of the seven personal samples were above the 0.2 fiber/cc permissible exposure level standard per 0SHA asbestos standard 29CFR 1926.58. All seven samples were above the 0.1 f,iber/cc action per the same standard. We encourage use of supplied air respirators whenever possible. Employees wore no street clothes, two pair of coveralls, headcovers, boots, gloves and A0 R57-A HEPA half-face cartridge respirators. They showered before lunch and at the end of the workday before leaving plant. Exposure monitoring may not be required in some instances where supplied air respirators in the positive pressure mode are being used for asbestos abatement projects.
