MMD-80-1, dated 3/7/80
BACKGROUND:
A sbestos monitoring data presented in Report #MMD80-1 (3/7/80) revealed three w ork stations in excess of federal a sb e sto s regulations. These operations w ere: the GLP P rem ix Blender, the B eater loading and the K neader unloading operations.
SUMMARY :
Latest monitoring data indicate problem in Beater Room has been corrected. Routine exhaust system perform ance checks and maintenance should con tinue.
E m p lo y e e e x p o s u r e s on the G L P P r e m i x Blendcx* a r e s t i l l in violatio n of the OSHA 8 hour TWA for a sb e sto s. P roblem rnay be excess Wollastonite which m ust be counted as asb e sto s. Handling p ro c e d u re s for W ollastonite should be reviewed and c o rre c te d if p o ssib le . No action taken on Kneader operation.

DISCUSSION
Beater Operation
Ambient fiber concentrations during the loading of the B eaters has been substantially reduced. C oncentrations are well below the cu rren t OSHA 15 m i n . a s b e s t o s s t a n d a r d .
Exhaust sy stem s in this and all other a re a s should be routinely checked to insure p ro p e r operation.

d u r i n g a p ro d u c tio n ru n of RX660 f u r n is h #6006A . A s shown in T ab le 1, th is a r e a is a g a in in v io la tio n of the OSHA 8 h o u r TWA a s b e s t o s s t a n d a r d .
We have exam ined all the sam ples taken during this operation and it appears the problem is excess Wollastonite and not asb esto s. Wollastonite is a m a te r ia l w hich m eets the NIOSH c r ite r io n for a s b e s to s (3:1 asp e ct r a t i o ,y 5 //, length) ev e n though it is not a s b e s t o s . In a d d itio n , OSHA d o e s not have a specific regulation for Wollastonite except as a nuisance dust. H ow ever, the NIOSH a s b e sto s pro ced u re re q u ire s any m a te ria l which m eets the crite rio n to be counted as asb e sto s.
Com paring the am bient a ir sam ples taken during the Blender o p e r ation with sam ples of Wollastonite alone and asb e sto s alone indicates the m a jo rity of the fib er m a te r ia l ia m o st likely W ollastonite.
P re s e n t exhaust sy stem s should p e r fo rm equally w ell on Wollastonite a s with asb e sto s. T h erefo re, we suggest that Wollastonite handling and loading p ro c e d u re s be exam ined and m odified in o rd e r to m inim ize n e e d less dust. If this is successfully done, "a sb e sto s" exposures on this o p e r a tio n should be re d u c e d to w ell .below OSHA l i m i t s .
A dditional m o n ito rin g can lie scheduled in o r d e r to te s t this hypothesis.
Kneader Operation We have not been notified on any ac tio n taken in this a r e a .
