Cole, Sc.D., Manager, Environmental Health, International lead ZinC Research Organization, Inc. Incidentally, Jerry Cole obtained his Doctoral degree from this Department before ray retirement, and he understands our policies. Thus you will understand I am sure, that what I say below is not intended, in any way, to question the propriety of his offer of information at an appropriate time. The work to which he refers in his letter, however, in relation to Air Quality, is being done in this Laboratory, as a part of the general investigation of the metabolism of lead in man, and you have no needs, either for your own information Or for that of the Industrial Hygiene Association, to go elsewhere than to me, (or to whomever may succeed me in the conduct of this work, or to the Director of the Laboratory). Lead Industries Association (or the organization represented by the larger title) has been one of the sponsors of this experimental program since 1962 (I believe, without looking into the record). For obvious reasons, we make progress reports, to sponsors of our work, from tin to time, but these are necessarily incomplete, and we do not approve of their issuance by the sponsors, since as you know, we publish in our own right. I merely mention these matters of policy, but the principal point of this letter is to assure you that anything we have, by way of information is available as "interim information" or as "private communications," if it is in such a stage as to be useful. I atn working on a report now of our latest experiment on the tolerable concentration of lead in the air (this experiment has just been completed and not all of the analytical data have been included thus far in our statistical study). I was disturbed by this news, and it seems to me that X should find out directly from you whether this is true, rather than at second hand out of the emotional turmoil of a case in litigation.
