I aa vary pleased to hear that you have already filtered 10 gallons of beer as agreed with Dr. Spell when he was hare last aonth. Incidentally, we would be interested la the details of your experiaantal set up for filtering such large quantities of beer. While 10 ug is generally our Halt of detection, the esti mations are less reliable at this level and banes our suggestion of filtering 10 gallons which would provide, as you say, about 25 ug of ohryaotile. This would be sell within our technique and we would be confident of our eetiaation. Ve use a 25 an aenbrane filter which enables us to put the filter directly on to the X-ray diffraotoaeter. As it happens we use a special Millipore Solvlnert filter which gives rise to less backgrosad interference in the relevant region of the diffraction patten. You will have gathered froa the above that ve would really like all the residue froa about 10 gallons of beer. If you could arrange to ash the filter and send us the ashed resides, we can re-suspend it and filter it through the special filters. This does introduce one extra- step but as we are looking for a difference of nearly two orders of aagnituds it should aake easy little difference. I think it likely that whan we have the X-ray diffraction results, we nay then want to do one or two areas shacks of the type you have in nlnd. X hope this will not inocaveniaase yen too wash.
