'-if/ ') Introduction The experiment described herein was designed to furnish information to the Lamp Division of the General Electric Company, concerning the likelihood of the absorption of lead from a lead-containing plastic coating used on the surface of incandescent lamps, should the coating be ingested accidentally or purposefully by a child or other person. ~~Tf~ r The plastic coating was furnished by the producer as fstrips of '; \ (S *i - f: ' . ' ' _ .' . a separate vial, and the average weight of each sample so provided was approximately 0.25 grams. The plastic material was characterized as a cellulose acetate, , butyrate-alkyd resin^..containing basic lead carbonate (2PbC0g ~ Pb(0H)2 ) in suspension. The lead content of the material was reported by a representative of the General Electric Company to be 12 per cent by weight. The extent of the extraction of lead from the material by pooled saliva and pooled gastric juice had been found to be slight, but the significance of this fact, in terms of human absorption, was not regarded as a/adequate indication of the potential hazard. It was suggested, therefore, and agreed upon^that the following more adequate experiment should be carried out.
