Gross a director at . the Chevrolet Motor Company ' Ay Edmund Copeland right explains the operation ofthe thermostatic control which he developed at a cost of125,000 asking for financial support to develop and produce refrigeration units Their partnership that year formed the Automatic Refrigeration Company which by 1917 was renamed Kelvinator Corporation id. In February 1918 Copeland sold the first electric automatic refrigerator ever produced to Joseph T. Schlacks the retired head of Detroit's McCord Manufacturing Company After the machine had proved successful Copeland admitted to Schlacks _ that the equipment was his initial production unit Schlacks just grinned and said wa If I had known it was the first machine I don't believe I would have ever bought it But it worked wonderfully and 15 years later Schlacks donated the refrigerator to COP the Smithsonian Institution whereit still resides 012 Under Under Copeland's leadership as its president Kelvinator produced the first feasible iceless units But not many The young company built just 67 units in 1918 Cigeration in 1921 Copeland left Kelvinator to start his own company Electricold Corporation took all he had learned at Kelvinator to his new company and began producing his own frigeration equipment - better built and less expensive to operate than its predecessors were filedfiled on December 31 1921 and signed by Edmund his sister and corporation corporation papers rother Two years later the new company moved to Flint Michigan and was renamed Copeland oducts Inc.
