On February 2, 1943 we reoeived froo Ovens Illinois Gina a Co.,
twfvaanples of a new produot fleeignat?^ as Hydrous CaToium Silicate' for **a say of physiological hazard of Inhalation of Inhaled dust. They were labeled respectively Sander Dust* and "Rotoclone Duet.*
l: ;
Preliminary inspection Indicated that they were irlxtures of parti culate and fibrous natcriale, the latter having the characteristics or asbestos. A combined petrographic anu X-ray diffraction analysis re vealed the, follovir.g approzia^te compositions:

The naterinl as received was too coarse to be injected into avails and had to be reduoed to proper particle size. _ Grinding was not feasible owing to the presence of ehrysotile whoae structure and irritating properties are destroyed by prolonged grinding. ve vert therefore compelled to reduce it by prolonged cutting vith scissors, sieving through a 200 neah screen and adjusting the proportion of fibree and particulrte natter in the product to that of the original pecinane.
Portions of eoch sacple were node up in physiological salt solution
in strengths of 5 and lo fer guinea pig injection. The pH of the
rotoclone sample vac 7.5 which should cause no tissue irritcticr.. That

Into the lungs by tracheal oathster* 5 dcses of 0.5 c.o each at intervale

Intranarltoneal injections of neither sample vers well received;
60 of those treated with the rotoclone sumple died within 2 to 3 weeks
and 80# of the ones getting the sender duct were dead in 0 day's. All
these pigs shoved aoute Inflammatory changes about n&cses of dead oelle

could not be evaluated except for the fact that it never occurs after
the injection of Quarts or asbestos alone. However, there were 3

high alkalinity. One was killed 1 aonth b:\. another 4 Months after

probably attributable to the quarts in the Mixture. nothing suggestive
of silicotic noduler fibrosis could be discovered either within the
lungs or the associated tracheobronchial lyc;.r. nco-es.
Suauary: After further reduction in size the two a&uples of this
mixture of asbestos, wood fibre, quarts and hydrated calciua silicate

The high alkalinity of the saucer dust probably accounts for the earlier
deaths in the ease of intraperitoneal injection where a large dose is
concentrated in a localised cavity and absorption la rapid. However,
the deferred deaths froa the rotoclone saaple with a pH of only 7,5 sug
gests cone other injurious property.
