__ new pocket-size indicator has re` cently been developed. In size and
.weight it compares with a small fold ing camera. The principle of opera tion is similar to that of the combus tible gas indicator. By operating a small piston-type pump, a sample of the atmosphere to be tested is drawn through a length of hose into the de tector. The concentration of gas may be read directly on the meter, which is graduated in per cent of the lower explosive limit. This device fills the need of operating men in that it can be carried about on the job and operated by any workman.
The Combustible Gas Alarm is an other detecting device which operates on the same general principle as the combustible gas indicator, except that it is designed for permanent installa tion and continuous service. I t gives a warning or operates controls when ever gas concentration reaches any pre-selected point between 10 per cent and 100 per cent of the lower explo sive limit. Several makes are now on the market.

Toxic Dusts
INCREDIBLE as it sounds, the en tire surface of a normal lung is equivalent in area to a strip of land occupied by a house 31 ft. square, ac cording to W. H. Lehmberg, Amer ican Optical Company research scien ce* tist,.and in 24 hours of normal respir~;.ation. approximately 600,000 cubic inches of air 'are breathed, the equiv alent of air contained in a room 7x7x7 feet.
Unfortunately, the scientist de clared, the lung, although an amaz ingly efficient organ, was not designed by Nature to overcome the injurious effects of silica dust and other toxic materials breathed in. Neither was it designed to eliminate entirely such materials.
Studies have revealed, he stated, that particles of silica dust in the neighborhood of 10 microns or smaller (a micron is 1/25,000 of an in.) are definitely harmful to the lungs, and their absorption over a period of time ttiay result in silicosis.
"The Mill Cannot Grind
with Water That's Passed"
Unlike "water over the dam"--skilled man power represents a costly investment. Costly to replace when head and eye injuries occur. Yet, it is remarkable to note how workmen can become habitually inspired to wear a comfortable, cool, well-fitting goggle, there by reducing eye hazards to a minimum for a very reasonable outlay.
