I agree with your remarks on the subject of the satisfaction and safety of driving, and I have qualified the brief statement in the text. I did not want to go into this in detail, since it is a complicated matter and is not further involved in the present study. As you say, the statistics show that the accident and fatality rates, per vehicle or per mile, are less than half of what they were 25 years ago -- but that still leaves much to be desired. Obviously, many factors are involved, and it is diffi cult to estimate the importance of engine performance per se. Dick Scales and Earl Bartholomew have asked me to send you the two copies of the memorandum which are enclosed herewith, for your review and comment. It has already been gone over by a number of people here, and I believe you will find it generally satisfactory for the purposes -which we discussed.
